Re: Raptors NBA Draft Thread: Kendall Marshall
Seriously, I do not know why people think that Marshall is like Calderon. If you actually watch him play he is always attacking the basket and making great passes, unlike Calderon who pounds the ball for 20 seconds and either passes it five feet around the perimiter or makes the safest play possible. Marshall can and will make flashy passes.

It's really puzzling. Anyone just taking a few minutes to watch both will see they're really nothing alike. Marshall can actually push the ball and isn't conservative to a fault.
And I still just can't understand why people are so down on this guy. Marshall was clearly the glue guy for a NCAA championship contending team, he clearly made their offense go, (just look at how crappy it looked when he was out with an injury) and offers such a rare commodity in today's game (the ability to capably run a team and put those players in easier position to score). Instead, everyone seems to be falling over themselves for just another small-sized shooting PG/SG who played against really crummy competition.
I think this is especially important because it's not likely that we'll ever land that top-tier superstar, that can make things happen through that person alone (like a Durant or LeBron) so we'd be adding someone that can make his teammates better/make their lives easier/and help make this team greater than the sum of its parts. It just makes sense.
Also, this notion that Kendall can't score is a bit false as well. Just re-posting what I wrote on page 2.
Brinbe wrote:Not a huge sample size, but Marshall definitely showed that he could score a bit during the last month of the season before the wrist injury. Decent numbers against good competition. http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketb ... l-marshall

Also, I feel that Casey is never going to be a superb offensive coach, which is why having Marshall would be so beneficial. He can practically run an offense by himself.

they maybe not the exact same players, but how can ppl say jose and this guy is NOTHING alike, nothing? really?...they are fairly similar imo...not saying marshall wouldnt be a great fit since we have scorers we just need a few more pure shooters around our PGs, hes a decent pick...im still waiting on his combine and athletic tests though, the guy looks alil slow and glued to ground

Drafting Marshall would make Vals transition into the NBA easier, not to mention increasing almost everyone's FG% (especially Demar).
He's also got great size for a point guard at 6'4 unlike Lillard.

Lillard is 6'2", with a very healthy wingspan. That's fine for a PG.

Re: Raptors NBA Draft Thread: Kendall Marshall
The key with Marshall is if the significant improvement he showed in is jumper his last 10 games or so, is permanent. Or will his jumpshot revert to the liability it was for the first half of the season.
There are some similarities between the two, but Marshall is much more of an attacker then Jose, even without great athleticism. Maybe he is somewhat similar to the Calderon in 2006/2007 who was less reliant on the jumper.
One thing they share right now is badl defence. Marshall was an average defender at UNC.

Jose in the second and third year was Marshall-ish.

Yes but he never really improved after that, except for his shooting; then he stopped attacking. Jose was very effective when he used to drive into the paint. However, even when Jose was driving he was still making those safe passes that drive me insane. I think that Marshall can still improve in a plethora of areas in his game, and at the eighth pick I think it is a chance worth taking.

Re: Raptors NBA Draft Thread: Kendall Marshall
Marshall is getting compared to the wrong Spanish PG. Conservative? Have you seen some of the passes this guy can make? Is a PG who commits 101 TOs in 36 games conservative?
I dare you to find a PG who averaged more than Marshall's 9.8 APG as a sophomore.

Re: Raptors NBA Draft Thread: Kendall Marshall
I would be happy with Marshall at #8 if we are taking a point. I am not a fan of Sullinger or Perry Jones III there both are PF's and the last thing we need is another one esp two who are criticized as being suspect defenders at their respective positions.
If are moving #8 I hope we get some legit talent back in return like a Jennings/Evans or somebody like that in a bigger deal.
Bargs + #8 for Erasn Ilyasova and Jennings works for me

Sure, he has elite court vision and playmaking ability that looks on the level of guys like Nash/Kidd/Rubio, but when you factor in his flaws as well, can he really be more impactful than Jose?
Pre-injury Jose was pretty fine I'd say.

Re: Raptors NBA Draft Thread: Kendall Marshall
The thing with Kendall Marshall is not that he can't score, but he can't score by creating something out of nothing when the offense breaks down. He's a guy that gets his baskets from what the defense gives him.
Basketball is like poetry in motion, cross the guy to the left, take him back to the right, he's fallin back, then just J right in his face. Then you look at him and say, "What?" - Jesus Shuttlesworth

Re: Raptors NBA Draft Thread: Kendall Marshall
While I think this pick makes a lot of sense for the Raptors, it is all going to hinge on Marshall's ability to learn how to hit an open mid-range jump shot.
Without that, he simply will not be able to function at the NBA level.

Re: Raptors NBA Draft Thread: Kendall Marshall
Drafting Kendall Marshall just seems like a lateral move although he's a much better distributor than Jose. We would need some more offensive weapons at the 2-5 spot.

I'd take him over Lillard, but the thought of a Marshall/ Calderon tandem gives me the heebie jeebies from a defensive perspective.

Kendall Marshall at the #8 slot is not bad at all, we do need a PG and he fills a need.

Re: Raptors NBA Draft Thread: Kendall Marshall
This #8 pick is definitely trade bait but If he shows well enough during workouts i'm fine with picking KM, PG is our biggest need. I do prefer to build my team through the draft but when it comes to the 1, I would rather spend money or trade for a LEGIT (Nash, Rondo or DWill) vet pg to run my team. Unless of course there is a nobrainer PG pick in the draft which there is not.
I just hope we are making a serious run at some of these PG's available through FA or trade.
