I would think that we would know something this summer and the change would go into effect the following season. It's going to take at least a year to come up with all new designs, uniforms, branding and all the other stuff associated with a new name. So I would assume if NO is going to make a change then they would probably want to get it done quickly, otherwise it will probably take two years before we can change over.

Nah

Benson himself said straight up he wants the Jazz name back and is working to get it. Nothing wrong with saying what we will do if the name is available. They are choosing not to comment, for whatever reason. Its not like they would be punished for addressing the situation.

I thought he said he wanted a name that the people could relate to "like" the Jazz used to. Not that he specifically wanted that name?

Benson can comment. MJ and the Bobcats FO cannot.

There isn't a difference. Jazz are a current taken name just like the Hornets. Theres a difference between saying you can't comment and actually not being able to comment. You could say Benson wasn't allowed to say what he said, but I doubt he was punished.

Or, even better, you rename the Raptors to the Grizzlies, move them to Vancouver, and piss Toronto off. RealGM would go offline again.

He doesn't own anything yet, does he? He was just a guy who wanted to buy a team at that point.

He said it during the press conference after he was announced as owner, with Stern sitting right there iirc. He probably didn't technically own the team at that point but I doubt that means he can say whatever he wants about it. Though if I remember right Stern was displeased that he brought it up

That's interesting about the Spirits of Saint Louis and how the owners still get paid every year from the ABA franchises that merged with the NBA thanks to some TV deal.

this is one of the interesting things i learned in the ABA book. 6 teams were left at the end of the ABA's last season: nuggets, pacers, spurs, net, colonels and spirits. 4 teams were admitted to the NBA, the other two negotiated nice settlements. The colonels received (i think 4mil for their franchise in a buy out). the owner of the colonels (who also owned KFC) turned around and bought the buffalo braves for half that amount. the owners of the spirit negotiated a deal that paid them a percentage of TV profits on the other 4 ABA teams......... forever!!!!

Somebody on GB found out that Angels of New Orleans is a name of an escort service and indeed a first google search result. They better go with the Spirit.
