POLL: The Bobcats should amnesty...
So what are everyone's thoughts about what the Bobcats should do this offseason with the amnesty clause?

Re: POLL: The Bobcats should amnesty...
for arguments sake, we want to sign a big free agent this summer and can only do so by using amnesty.
my vote in that situation would be for tyrus, because he has the best chance of getting a contract that would help offset his cost.

No reason to amnesty someone entering their final year unless they were making 15-20m. Diop and Carroll will go off the books and if we want to move Maggette, I can see more than one team giving us offers (Dallas maybe?).

Re: POLL: The Bobcats should amnesty...
If Dallas is making a run at Dwight and Deron, they can sign Deron now, and then they'll need to clear cap space for 2013. They would have to get rid of Haywood and Marion to make that happen. Haywood can be amnestied but Marion has to be traded for an expiring. I believe a Marion/Maggette swap would work. Expiring contracts make nice trade chips, so there's definitely no need to amnesty Maggs, Diop, Carroll, etc.
That leaves Tyrus Thomas, who has done absolutely nothing but take up cap space. Amnesty him.

I know last season gave us the bad TT, but I keep remembering stuff like this from last summer
http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2011/0 ... rough.html
There was a time where folks here were really positive about TT and the way he had embraced the city. With a summer to really bulk up and a new coach maybe things could be different.
IDK. I'll be the first to admit that TT is the root of nearly all of his own problems and that no player can survive on potential forever. It's just that I have this fear that the team will amnesty him just as he's turning it around.

My picks:
2020 Draft (3rd pick) - Tyrese Haliburton, Devin Vassell, or Onyeka Okongwu
2021 Draft (11th pick) - Moses Moody

I've made brilliant arguments on this in like 7 threads. I'll sum them up by saying only short sighted fools would amnesty Tyrus right now.

Short sighted because SIX years isn't long enough for someone to develop? He has shown literally no development in six years. That tells me he does nothing to develop his game. Is that the kind of example you want for the younger players?

This offseason? If it is not specific about which season then it is a no-brainer.

This is exactly why it's short sighted. You don't have a plan, you just go "HURR THOMSA SKUCS!" and avoid all thoughts after that. Anyone with a brain can see that you don't amnesty someone unless you're making a basketball move of which amnesty is a part.

Re: POLL: The Bobcats should amnesty...
crunk's argument has always been that there is no need to amnesty anyone until we need the capspace. its a valid argument.
counter arguments would be:
1) getting rid of a player who is a cancer and bad influence might be addition by subtraction
2) amnestied played might sign a deal with another team and therefor their salary owed would be reduced by the amount of their new salary, so less money paid by bobcats.

I've been pretty absent for most of the season (obvious). Can you elaborate on why amnestying Tyrus would be foolish?

counter argument to this would be
1) sit him at home if you want to so bad
2) If this was the real concern we would have amnestied someone as soon as it was an option. clearly this isn't a big deal.

because that's NBA 2k12 style GMing and shows no long term vision. If we have a guy ready to sign an offer sheet, and need the 6 million, you amnesty Tyrus. If you need 10, you amnesty Maggette. If no one ends us signing, you don't put yourself through the salary floor and sign a bunch of scrubs to replace a scrub.
Simply put, we can use it strategically instead of just trying to make a point by amnestying Thomas.

That's a nice straw man. You amnesty someone to free up cap space to put it to better use. That is such a completely obvious point I didn't think it needed to be said but apparently you were befuddled so my apologies for overestimating you. Amnesty allows us to be $20m under the cap. This would allow us to extend Augustin, land Jamison to a reasonable contract and still have cap space for a better player than anyone on our roster. Also, I should have mentioned the Bobcats should continue to pay the power bill so the lights work in the arena next year (just in case Crunk posts another equivalent gotcha post - "AHA! you didn't say the Bobcats would pay the power bill so you have no plan!!!!")

You have no clue how a team works do you? You think everyone only sees each other on the court during a game and has no other interaction than that? There's practices, bus time, tape time, locker room time, plane time... the guy could never play a minute and still have a negative impact on the team.

Re: POLL: The Bobcats should amnesty...
I'm pretty out of the loop, but doesn't the amnesty provision expire? Wouldn't it be logical to cut Tyrus if we felt like he wasn't worth the remainder of his contract, especially if we could hypothetically find a prospect that plays for the minimum to replace his contribution?

It's usable for as long a pre-CBA player is still on our roster from what I remember.
