Re: Atlanta Hawks Official Trade Ideas Thread
If Josh still wants moved I have 2 scenarios with Houston that may work:
#1 Josh Smith for Samuel Dalembert (6.7M expiring) and 2 2012 1st round picks
#2 Josh Smith and Marvin Williams and 2012 1st round pick for Kevin Martin and Samuel Dalembert and 2 2012 1st round picks
Trade #1 trims about 6M in cap space and gives the Hawks 3 1st rounders in a deep draft to add young rotation players under fixed salaries (think Meyers Leonard, Terrence Jones, and Tony Wroten).
Possible Lineup (not sure who resigns from bench except Ivan)
Teague/Draft Pick
J. Johnson
Williams/Draft Pick
Horford/I. Johnson
Dalembert/Pachulia/Draft Pick
Trade #2 keeps the window open by replacing Williams with Martin while adding some youth. On the downside it doesn't save money next year.
Possible Lineup (push hard to keep Pargo at least in this situation)
Teague/Poss. Pargo
Martin/Draft Pick
J. Johnson
Horford/I. Johnson
Dalembert/Pachulia/Draft Pick
I'm not a big Dalembert fan (or like his contract), but he adds length and Houston has picks to help build a talented rotation in a few years.

"#1 Josh Smith for Samuel Dalembert (6.7M expiring) and 2 2012 1st round picks"
Looks interesting. What about quality over quantity: NOH
Okafor / #3
NOH probably wants out of Okafor's contract, maybe:
Okafor / #3 / #10
for
Smith / #23 / 2nd
Draft Drummond and Lillard
We'd have cap issues next season, but finally a deep balanced team:
Okafor / Drummond (#3) / Zaza
Horford / Ivan
MW /
JJ /
JT / Lillard
Few min contracts and we're in business. Amnesty JJ in a year or two and re-sign Zaza and MW, use JJ's money for a nice FA or two.

Now he can showcase himself to other teams and be at a good size for SF for when he finally lands with a competent team. Anybody thinking Smith is better at the 4 is absurd. Playing him at the 3 maximize his abilities..
I do not think playing the 3 maximizes his potential, as we have seen this year that he has been among the best 5s in the L.
But I truly believe that he playing the 3 maximizes our defense or, specially, our protection of the rim, if the things are well done. Of course, if Smith tries to keep up with fast 3s, Horford with fast 4, and Zaza, Collins or (pleeease) whoever better with fast 5s, the defense will be a desaster.
But if Smith, Horford and, for example, as well said, Perry Jones protect the rim, if we get any other 5 who can jump a little, then we can play bad defense, kind of a zone, but be very efective and, specially, asertive.

The capspace isn't much of an incentive because Josh only has a year left on his deal. Perhaps if after the lottery the #13 lands in the top 3 but as of right now that's not much.

We wouldn't be able to acquire McGee straight up for Josh Smith, yet you have Brewer included, and a 1st round pick.

Josh Smith for Lowry/Dalembert/1st rounder - No
Josh Smith for Varejao/T. Thompson - No

Josh Smith for Granger/1st rounder - No
Josh Smith for Evans/1st rounder - Yes
JSmith for McGee/Brewer/1st - HELL YES
JSmith for Ariza/1st - No
No chance we get McGee + Brewer + a 1st though, I think a fair trade would be something like Smith for McGee + Harrington and a swap of 1sts.

You have to think beyond emotion. How exactly would you value the team if they lost Josh for nothing?
Well even if you don't want to believe the trade demand rumors you are still faced with the reality of the cap situation considering that he, Zaza and Teague will be free agents in a season.
Now here is an extra wrinkle to the new CBA: when all of the new tax rules take effect the end of that year, if a team has been over the lux tax over the past 3 years they get an additional dollar added to the dollar for dollar tax.
The Hawks already wasted a tax year on Dampier and may just have to do so next season if they plan on having a bench outside of rookie minimums.
The ASG is already using playoff revenue, the new revenue sharing system and the money from the sold pick just to offset ~1.5 mil they are charged for Damp.
Where will they get the resources to hold this core together?

Re: Atlanta Hawks Official Trade Ideas Thread
I'm not against trading Josh. But it needs to be for a position of need and will at least leave the team equal or better. If it makes us worse, we would be better off letting him walk and getting the capspace.
Josh Smith for Lowry/Dalembert/1st rounder
You can get what Dalembert offers from any stiff in the league now. He can't produce offensively, he honestly isn't that impressive defensively. He can finish better than Zaza, but honestly Zaza is a better defender than Dalembert. Put Dal on the front court with Horford and you basically have no one that the other team has to respsect on the block.
Lowry isn't that much of a upgrade over Teague and I like Teague's upside alot more.
Josh Smith for Varejao/T. Thompson
Varejao is injury prone and not particularly good at anything. Thompson, I like and has nice upside, but the way we use the 3 on this team, all we need is a solid defender that can hit the corner three...thats it. He would be a waste.
Josh Smith for Iggy/1st rounder - Yes
If Joe was included in the trade and we got more back from Philly, sure. But as is Joe/Iggy are just duality and I don't really see us better. Plus we would need a PF after trading our PF(or Center if people are so intent on putting Al Horford at the 4). We aren't better, we would still need the same thing we need now.
Josh Smith for Granger/1st rounder - No
Again, our front line gets so depleted unless we add something else there. I like Granger, but he/joe...wouldn't work.
Josh Smith for Evans/1st rounder
If the first rounder is unprotected and we can get Joe gone in that deal too, then fine, But a scoring guard doesn't solve our front court problems and leaves us just bad defensively.
JSmith for McGee/Brewer/1st
I don't see how people that get frustrated with Smith's basketball IQ think trading him for the guy with the worse basketball IQ in the game would be better. He is showing his occasional flash of potential that he usually does, but so did Stromile Swift, Kwame Brown and other bigs that were always "Man if they ever get it together". Maybe I will be proven wrong, but I don't like it. I just dont think much of the guy.
JSmith for Ariza/1st
No. I would trade Marvin for Ariza though.
I've said before, Smith for Jefferson, I am cool with. Smith for Bosh, I would also do (I know no one would like that but hey). Smith for Gortat and Morris, I would think hard about. I am not above trading the guy, but I am above making the team worse just because you want to make a move.
No list a bunch of "trade Joe for" or "trade Marvin for" list and I would be all over that.

Re: Atlanta Hawks Official Trade Ideas Thread
I like Lowry as a floor general, Teague as a 6th man personally.
The thing about getting a big man for Josh is there aren't many available. Bosh for Josh I don't like much, I don't think the Suns want to give up Gortat (Though they'd love Josh), and I don't think the Jazz would want Josh.
What about Teague/Josh/1st for a Deron Williams sign and trade? We'd have to get him to come here, but a Deron/Horf pick and roll makes my mouth water.
Who would want Marvin?
Possibilities in the East: Washington, Cleveland, Charlotte, Toronto
Possibilities in the West: Lakers, Minnesota, Sacramento, Utah, maybe Clips and Rockets

Re: Atlanta Hawks Official Trade Ideas Thread
I think the taker list for Marvin is alot larger than people believe. He is a solid defender, a solid rebounder from the 3 spot and can hit the 3.
I think teague and josh and a 1st are way too much for Deron because, again, we lose too much defensively with Josh leaving.
The point I am making is that we have to recover something defensively when trading Josh Smith. Thats where you have to get more than one guy for him to cover all of what he does for the team.
