People who hate stats simply don't understand them.

People love hating what they don't understand.

Ignorance is bliss.

How much time do you need to actually look at the stats that compose PER? 15 seconds? Is that too much? If you have watched the player and the team enough, you have a good idea of context and you can weight that stats much more accurately instead of using a fit all weighting.

Using PER is akin to reading ultra-condensed versions or cliff notes of great books.

LOL at the people who disparage statistics because the numbers don't favor their favorite players.

According to those three stats Kobe has at least 17 players in the NBA better than him. I love stats, but they aren't telling us who is the better player. There are too many variables. A players willingness and ability to lead is very underrated, IMO.

People are always going to see what they want. However, if I am getting this right, OP's 3 stats are all pretty similar meaning the repetition is pointless.

LeBron may win off of statistics, but in terms of what player means the most to his team, it is Paul.

only reason kobe is not higher on those list is because he is not efficient

So, basically Advanced Stats tell us the Ryan Anderson is a Top 10 player in the league

Are we sure they are really, ehm, "advanced" ?

What's the difference between watching a player score x points with y shots at z efficiency and using statistical analysis to come up with the same conclusions?

stats are only pointless to you because you a) don't understand them or b) purposefully ignore them.

Can stats measure leadership?

I always like how when these stats are used, random players like ryan anderson or Noah pop up. Usually though the players on these lists end up being exactly who you would expect.

This is a really shallow debate. It's like a bunch of 8th graders debating world politics.

There is a very strange dynamic going on between the General board and this one. This thread got moved here because it involved stats, but of course the type of stat discussion that comes from the GB isn't at all the same thing as what we do on the Stats board. I've tried to explain this to other mods to no avail, so just roll with it and try to be patient with the people who are doing their best.

(Those shutting their eyes and plugging their ears though, go ahead and destroy them in ways too subtle for me to have to mod you on. )

On another note, who do I contact about paying me every time someone says, "watch the game with your eyes?"

If you could measure it, that measurement would be a stat.

How can so many different people, on so many different forums, concerning so many different sports ....

.... have the exact same argument?

(I'm sure there's a formula to explain it...)
