Does Dwyane Wade have a shot to surpass Dan Marino...

Post#1 » by FlashKing » Thu May 10, 2012 3:26 pm

As South Florida's most beloved athlete... assuming he and LeBron deliver 2-3 championships?

I know this is a pretty random question but i've had it on my mind ever since Wades performance in the 2006 finals.

He certainly does. Right now i think he's an undisputed #2 behind Marino. A couple more championships and I think he'd be #1. That's my opinion though, but I'd assume the rest of Miami is of similar opinion.

He doesn't anymore. I'm just glad both were in Miami, but Miami has always been a football town. Just to show you how it works, Lebron and Wade can win the next 3 NBA Finals but if Tannehill wins ONE Super Bowl, he will surpass them both. That's how strong the Dolphins' culture is around here.

When Wade won the championship in 2006, that was very debatable. When he brought Bosh and Lebron, he definitely made his case stronger. But now as the sidekick, he pretty much will stick with number 2. His contributions to the team and the community will keep him there.

Lebron isn't even as popular as Alonzo was and still is in Miami, hell I don't even think he's as popular as Shaq was (Shaq really filled the house at the Triple A).

He was damn close after '06 and it's important to remember that Marino is basically a god down here. Wade's chances have slimmed quite a bit. Looking at this team now, Lebron is pretty clearly the best player so our successes will be viewed as flowing through him. Also Wade's not the worker he was early on. That's why we all love Zo and young Wade so much. The heart matched the talent. The older version has embraced the loafing superstar role a little too easily.

Before LBJ came here, yeah.

Wade is still loved here, even given a pass. Marino is still #1 right now, but he never did win a SuperBowl, but we still loved him.

if the Heat get more championships, I think Wade can pass him. But if LBJ is still getting MVP's and stuff, it's like it will be balanced between those 2. LeBron will probably never get the same love as Wade, if anything he will get more blame while Wade gets free passes (), but it's always going to be Wade County.

Depends on how fed up people are getting of the Dolphins too. We haven't had a great QB since Marino, had disappointing seasons... if the Dolphins continue to suck while the Heat get titles, who knows, there can be a basketball over football shift... but the football here is just too strong. Especially if LBJ/Wade retires and we go back to sucking, people would still love the Dolphins even if they suck lol.

He will. The city is bigger than the Marino years. There's an entire generation of kids who have never seen Marino play. Wade is already the athletic symbol of this city. The rise of the Bradys and Rogers of the world have also diminished Marino's name. The Heat are the most-relevant thing going. If the Marlins had kept those teams together, some of those players might be big names, but they're not. Only Wade is remembered fondly for a championship down here. PEACE.

good point about the next generation.

Seeing Wade and LBJ in action for years to come with kids growing up, is a big factor.

Miguel Cabrera would have been a big name here too if he stayed.... ugh. Latino, stud, was young. He's fat now but he's still one of the best and scariest hitters.

Wasn't meant to be, I think the people that are actually from MIAMI, would fell the same sentiment. Even all the broadcasters say Wade is the Heart of Miami, despite LeBron being the MVP

Nope. I thought he would after 2006 but somehow I think he got off the path and it's too late now.

Dan was like the Wilt Chamberlain of QBs. There was nothing like him before. His legend only grows now It would require a lot of winning by a Wade lead Heat to surpass that and it just didn't materialize T the right time.

Maybe with a generation that never saw Dan play.

I did and I'll happily let them share the town.
I remember when the Dolphins were perennial contenders

If the Dolphins would have remained a respectable organization over the last decade, perhaps not. As it stands, the Heat outshine the Dolphins as an organization, and it's not close. I love Dan, and I watched him as a kid, but as far as I'm concerned, Wade is the greatest athlete in Miami's sports history.

And the Dolphins won't be winning anything anytime soon. That franchise needs a wipe down starting at the owner and all the way down to the janitors. Disgraceful.

This is only Lebron's 2nd year here and its not even done yet.

Wade will pass Marino, especially if the team keeps winning and the Dolphins keep losing (tilting the franchise importance scales). The Bears and Cubs were a lot more popular than the Bulls until the Bulls started winning a lot. People like a winner.

If the Heat keep winning Wade and Lebron will both pass Marino.

A generation who haven't seen him play and even more who only saw him at the end. You also make a good point about the new QBs. With the new rules Marino isn't way out ahead in the stats anymore.

I've always heard negatives about Marino. Not sportswise but in terms of personality and such. Couple that with the never winning a championship (AFC champs doesnt count) while Wade has. Also, he had that short-lived front office stint with the Phins. Meanwhile has a squeaky clean PR and stays involved in charity/community events. Pretty clear that Wade will eventually "surpass" Marino if he hasn't already.

Yes, by the end of his career he will be more beloved than Marino. People will not give him that title to Wade while he is still playing, but when its all over with and he retires and never leaves the Heat he will be number one. Alonzo would be as equal if he never left for New Jersey. Some still angry over that. I understood why Zo left and supported that decision.

I think he can be an equal to the Miami community as Dan Marino. Dan was the man(no pun intended) and the city loved him like no other. Wade is also the man and the city loves him like no other. The only two things that make Wade better in my eyes for Miami is that he had the opportunity to leave for better things and instead brought it all here where he loves to be, and he had a championship. Both will be Miami Sport lords forever, time will tell with how Wade continues in his career and post career in Miami.
