No. You would have to renounce his rights to make enough room. Therefore, we could not match any offers.

No because the Magic would have to renounce his rights to get that qualifying offer off the cap, thus making him an unrestricted free agent.

Anderson s&t for Deron s&t.

Nets will want to get something back for Deron rather than risk losing him for nothing to the Mavs. Anderson has history with them.

Personally, I feel that if the Magic did manage to get under the cap like that (even though trading Hedo at this point seems like a pipe dream) they should go after a guy like Dragic because he's;

a) cheaper, the Magic could get him for 2-3 million less per year than Deron which they could use to sign another player

and

b) Call me crazy, but I think he's going to be a better player over the life of his contract than Deron. He's younger, more durable and a more efficient scorer. Kid has massive star potential.

As such, if I am committing myself (speaking as ownership again) to making changes, then I need to know if my biggest asset to make changes is staying or going. I've already "fired" my son-in-law from the COO (I think that's right) position. Next I am about to fire my GM/PBO. I've already started to make changes.

but the thing is that this isn't a negotiation between two parties on the same page. for the Magic FO to take a hardline stance with Dwight, they are making the negotiation process harder - so you have to take a moment to stop and think about it from Dwight's perspective. if the Magic aren't offering anything that interests him, then we risk losing him.

it's nothing to do with picking player over team, it's do to with finding common ground fast enough to get the player back on the team. why do you think i'm arguing that the Magic should go ahead and make wholesale changes? because i want Dwight to stay here.

I agree we need changes. I'm saying that changing COOs and GM is a big step in the right direction. That's a big signal that the organization is ready to make changes.

We need to move forward as a team, hopefully with D12.

mhectorgato wrote:I would prefer that D12 stay and we build around him. But I can't wait until mid-season to see how feels about the matter. What if I do everything in my power to placate him and he still doesn't want to stay? How many future seasons have I potentially damaged because of not getting a commitment.

People on this board are always talking about fiscal responsibility and the need to be forward looking. Well, to me, this is an exact definition of that matter. This is more than giving JRich a 4 year deal. This potentially signing several guys for a player that won't be around for more than 1/2 a season.

that depends on the team's plan of action. i've said numerous times that if the team positions itself to target cap space next season, or if they acquire players like Smith/Monta/Iggy who all have expiring contracts next season, then we upgrade whilst remaining flexible to either:

a) continue making changes around Dwight if he stays.

b) have the freedom to sign several of the top tier FAs next season and reload without Dwight.

i honestly don't think any of the packages being offered for Dwight, short of this year's #1 pick, are better value than the host of players we could potentially sign next summer. why waste time trading him for lesser value and losing all hope of resigning him when we could just stay the course for brighter prospects regardless of what Dwight does. it's in the best interest of the team.

Your preference would be to let him walk?

I don't get this organization. Let me get this straight. We're telling Dwight to commit before we make changes? Are we really saying: "sign long term, or we'll continue to do what we do and overpay old players."

Dwight or not, we need to rid ourselves of this horrible roster. And why are we talking about GM possibilities if the Magic still haven't fired theirs? Our ownership is spineless.

If he walks and we're positioned to have abundant cap space to sign up to 3 of the following:

Bynum
Harden
Iggy
Smith
Monta
Jefferson
Millsap
Ibaka
Jennings
Wall
etc etc

As opposed to taking back Lopez, or Bynum (who may just as likely walk himself), or Bogut, or whatever else is on the table, then yes, I'd rather take my chances reinvesting Dwight's $20m into the FAs above.

The #1 pick is the only thing that I'd value over any of those guys, though. If that was on offer I'd definitely consider it.

MagicLA wrote:DWIGHT / MAGIC CONTRACT OPTIONS:

• A new contract (with Bird Rights) = Five new seasons with 7.5% annual raise.
This is only an option for the Magic or to a team Howard is traded to prior to the (2012-2013) mid season trade deadline

• A new contract (standard with no Bird Rights) = Four new seasons with 4.5% annual raise
This is the scenario for other teams If the Magic do not trade Dwight and he becomes an unrestricted free agent July 2013

• A Veteran Extension Contract = One current contract season (2012-2013) + Three new seasons with 7.5% annual raise + 15% bonus
This is the scenario if the Magic demand a signed extension prior to the new season

• Extend and Trade = One current contract season (2012-2013) + Two new seasons with 4.5% annual raise
Howard can only be extend and traded during this offseason prior the 2012-2013 season which would be his last season.

A player cannot be traded in an extend-and-trade after the season (for example, on draft day) in the last season of his contract, or in any season that might be the last season due to an option or ETO.

• Sign and Trad = Four year with 4.5% annual raises
Of note, the summer of 2013 if Howard is an unrestricted free agent and seeking a S/T scenario which would be necessary if he wanted to sign with a team over the cap:

Starting in 2013-14, the team receiving the player cannot be above the “apron” ($4 million above the tax level) after the trade1 and also the team cannot receive a player in a sign-and-trade if they have used the Taxpayer Mid-Level exception that season"

Well at least those other names have experience, so that's a good start.

Then why aren't they gone yet? I wouldn't put it past this organization to f something like this up. I wonder if we're waiting for the draft lottery to see where NJ lands. If they get the unlikely 1st pick, I bet that's enough for them to just keep Stan and trade Dwight for that pick.

I still can't explain why Otis still has a job though. He should be gone regardless of the situation.

I really wouldn't be surprised if Otis stayed here.......It'd be right in line with some of the other weird decisions we have made.

Ryno will be on the scrub team that practices with the US Olympic team this summer.

Ryan Anderson will help the U.S. men’s basketball team prepare for the Summer Olympics in London.

The Orlando Magic forward has been added to the USA Select team roster that will help the Olympic squad train July 6-12 in Las Vegas. CSNBayArea.com first reported the news, and a league source confirmed Anderson’s inclusion to the Orlando Sentinel.

The USA Select team also will include DeMarcus Cousins, Kyrie Irving, Jeremy Lin and John Wall.
