Looking back on the 2003 Yankees, the team that I idolized as a child, I realized just how stacked that pitching staff was:
Mike Mussina
Andy Petite
Roger Clemens
David Wells
Jose Contreas
Jeff Weaver
LOOK AT IT!!!!
Thoughts?
Also I understand they didn't win a championship, but the Marlins were somehow ridiculously good during that series.

Ya thats was a pretty ridiculous pitching staff. But if you go and look at the WS team the Marlins brought against NY its crazy. So many of those kids turned into great ball players. Thats one series Ive never gotten too upset about. But I never hear the end of it living down here now.

1996 had
Key
Cone
Pettitte
Doc Gooden
1999
Cone
Pettitte
El Duque
Clemens
1998
Cone
Pettitte
Wells
El Duque
YOu have to remove Contreras and Weaver from the list. They were non positive factors and Weaver helped cost the Yankees game 4 of the 2003 World Series so FC UK him.

Contreas and Weaver were both shuffled between the bullpen and the 5 spot
They contributed, not much but still
Also Contreas was the Cuban Yu Darvish in terms of hype, he has to be counted

Ok, I'll give you Beckett's one year ace, one year above average as one...I'll even give you AJ Burnett as "great ball players" but Carl Pavano? Brad Penny? Dontrell Willis?
No, the Yanks aging legs were spent especially after that battle vs the Sawx.
Still say the '96 team with Key, Cone, Pettitte, and Dwight Gooden...just something special about them and how they defeated the Braves at the height of their powerful rotation.

What is so special about that team? Why does contreras's hype make the pitching staff great? Weaver's era was 5.99. how do you contribute anything with that? Clemens and Wells weren't anything special either at that point.

Pavano was good that year, he just tanked when he came to NY(like a lot of Marlins players seem to do), Penny had a good year, and Willis was really good until he was traded and they messed with his mechanics.
But I was also referring to their roster as a whole with players like Pudge, Miguel Cabrera, Derek Lee, Mike Lowell, Alex Gonzalez, Luis Castillo, Juan Pierre and Encarnacion. That was a great youth team.

I still love watching Game 7 ALCS and seeing the starters coming in in relief, especially Boomer coming out of the bullpen only to give up a HR to Ortiz.
