barelyawake wrote:Hey Fish,

Let's see. Long story short (too late)... I'm still roaming the country for work. On various hotel beds, I wrote one and a half movies (that I now believe will never be produced, despite the umpteen phone calls ardently promising the contrary). I outlined and started a book (that I will never finish). The book is based on a movie short that I wrote (that MIGHT actually be shot). The short is a horror (but poetically told). It is the best thing I have ever written. And the director agreed wholeheartedly, until he started his "edits." Suffice to say, I've fully learned to never trust a syllable from any cog of the Hollywood machina. So, I have zippy faith in any of it ever coming to pass (even as we set dates to shoot the short).

Oh, and my art auction got robbed in Canada. So, I was a hostage for fifteen minutes. First time I had a gun in my face. So, that was new. Took me a month to stop jittering.

Shoot, you should have had our boy Mr Sus-- uh -- Induveca with you. He held off three guntoting kidnappers with naught but a piece of a garden fence WHILE he was banging a hot supermodel Peruvian chica. No lie. True story. :clown:

Glad to hear you're well my boy. I'm in the middle of six scripts I will never finish and three graphic novels I'm illustrating that will only serve to tantalize a bunch of kids who ask "when is your comic coming out?" But it's all good. Better to have too much inspiration than none at all. I guess. And now I'm thinking of writing erotica, because there's 50 Shades of millionaire in that market. And I can talk naughty with the best of 'em. Got to monetize those vices, and time-wasters. You know. At least until my royalty checks from RealGM clear for all them Wizboard HOF posts. Big Fish, Big Fish.

Oh yeah but RIP to the only GoGo bandleader I can stand to listen to for very long. Chuck Daddy, surprised to recognize I was going to miss you. I'll rep you to the R&R Hall of Fame, Chuck Brown alone kept the format alive. And what other regional music exists in the US? I can't think of a one.

Zydeco maybe?

Thanks Doc. I should send you the short. I think you'd dig the concept.

Pretty emasculating when you tell your sister, "You know, you see a million guns in movies, but when one is put to your head it's a whole different thing." And you hear back, "I had a guy pull a gun on me. I told that punk to shove that..." Ok Sis...

Personally, I was stone (if stone can quiver). The guy was barking at me, and I just stared blankly at him. My head refused to concede that it was reality. Keep in mind, we are at a ballroom in the most prestigious golf club in Canada. Their Augusta. I had literally just told this gal I was hitting on, "You know, crazy stuff always seems to happen to me when I come to Canada," as an introduction to my "quirky, Canadian, horror stories." She smiles and gives me a, "Like what?" And a ski-masked robber burst in and yells, "Where's the Dali?" And since I'm the guy in the suit, he puts a gun to my head. It was like a punch line in a bad romcom. My brain couldn't stop thinking, "This is a joke, right?" Where's Alan Funt? Ashton? Anyone?

And Doc, at least you get to play cool, artist dad. You'll be thanked in whatever acceptance speech he gives. "It all started with my Dad showing me his work," he'll tell Larry King's son. My work's only benefit is as a pick-up line for strippers. "Well, right now, I'm writing a movie. Can you act?" And what has that netted me? I swear, I have two "stripper scripts" and two strippers nagging me for writing tips.

Bluegrass is pretty regional (Kentucky and West V).

Yeah that was the first one I thought of.

Louisiana is a bit of a hotbed of regional music:

A lot of stuff like hip-hop, grunge, house, techno started off regional and spread nationwide eventually.

Okay see, now I got to touch base with you. I got tangentially related stories to tell on this front. Off public channel.

Bluegrass is pretty regional (Kentucky and West V).

Okay true. Thing is Bluegrass, Zydeco, you cant really pin on one particular Godfather. Not like the way Chuck Brown carried that genre. I can't think of a format that remained so durably popular in one (especially) urban area that didn't spread elsewhere, remained parochial. Nor one that is so tied to one particular figure.

I'd be interested though if there are counterexamples. Love to see youtubes of the acknowledged masters of little known niche genres.

Not a big go go fan, but I saw Chuck Brown maybe 4-5 times through the years, going back to the a multi-band showcase (Trouble Funk, Outrage, can't really remember them all) where I seemed to be the only white person there, except for one white guy onstage. That was my crash course in go go. I liked the non-stop percussion. A few years ago, I saw Chuck Brown playing at an outdoor event, and he didn't seem to have aged much. I think I saw that the Post had a article about his life and passing, A1 above the fold. He is that important to DC.

I can think of other regional music styles, mostly formally or informally tied to religion, but I can't really think of a style so distinctly tied only to one urban region.

This could be his best song IMO.

I think for the world outside of DC, it's Whitney, Donna, and Robin Gibb. For DC, it's definitely Whitney, Chuck, and Donna.

So nobody is going to die for a long while.

What about that guy from the Beastie Boys who died a few weeks ago? Does he count in the rule of 3? If so, Robin Gibb might have started a new 3. :o

I did not want to start the thread for Robin Gibb, but I listen to the BeeGees on my playlist more than anyone. That group has had a very profound impact on me. They go so far back.

Recent musician deaths: Robin Gibb, Donna Summer, Chuck Brown, Donald "Duck" Dunn (of Booker T and the MGs), Adam Yauch, Levon Helm. They all had an impact on me. Maybe it comes in sixes.

You're right - How did I forget about Adam Yauch? I guess it's because I rarely thought of him by his real name. But yeah, even though he was part of a group, he was 1 of a kind and made a huge impact. And I love the Beastie Boys. "No sleep till Brooklyn" still sends chills up my spine, because my mother (and her family) is from there, and it reminds me of visiting there years ago.

Brass Monkey is such a cool song. I like their songs where they just let it all hang out. My boss came up to me, and I had to resist saying Whatcha watcha watcha want? Watcha want?
