Basketball IQ -- what is it? how do you acquire it?

Post#1 » by Ginger Bean » Sat May 19, 2012 8:34 am

What are your opinions on the concept of basketball iq?

-- Top 5 highest bb iq players of all-time?
-- Bottom 5?
-- What is your definition of bb iq?
-- Is it innate or can it be learned?

To me, basketball IQ means:

-Knowing where the ball needs to be, when you have the ball in your hands
-Knowing where you need to be, when you don't have the ball in your hands

^

Also,

- Seeing a play before it develops
- Knowing how to beat your opposing player (both offensively and defensively)

it is basically making the right decision.

and not taking stupid shots.

And for me it is hard to put guys like Shaq or Jordan into a top 5 list for players with the highest basketbal iq, because they are so dominant that even their bad decisions might have a good outcome.

If they decide to put up a shot against a double team, it inherently is a bad decision and shows bad bball iq, even though they were able to convert these type of shots.

On the other hand, a guy like Steve Nash without his bball iq, would look like Jimmer Fredette on the court.

Steve Nash would still lok better because of his vastly superior ball handling that allows him to create some stuff that otherwise would not be there. It's being able to see plays develop, and know what to do in different situations. Can also be called having a "feel" for the game; being able to naturally make plays without overthinking. Has very little to do with actual IQ though, so you can be super "smart" in other ways and have terrible ball IQ.

Oh, how do you acquire it, no one way, but being observant about what's going on on the court when you aren't playing is good. Watching others and picking up the errors in spacing, off ball movement, defensive rotations, etc should help you in learning to avoid those things.

Basically I think it's akin to IQ in any job.

Some work at coffee shops, and just serve whatever kind of coffee shoots out the machine, and kind of leave it at that... and others precisely prepare the coffee and go thru the sub-conscious effort of cleaning the counter and keeping everything in order.

Not the greatest analogy, but it's the same for any other kind of job. Jordan, Duncan, Bird.. they just always considered the little things.

Smart off-the-ball play probably comprises a bulk of b-ball IQ. If you can't make yourself helpful to the team w/o having to jack shots or dribble, then it's a sign you're lacking something up in your brain, because there are 9 players w/o the ball at all times, and there's a lot going on away from the ball.

I think it has a lot to do with the way you "see" the game.. a lot of the guys mentioned in this thread have been quoted as saying that they feel as though things are in slow motion for them when they're on the court.

Just being in that flow state where you're "feeling" the game instead of thinking about it allows you to process things quicker and just makes you less prone to mistakes.

For anyone interested in sports psychology:

But yeah.. I feel like a prerequisite to having bball IQ is being relaxed and mentally in a state where you always have a feel for what you should be doing on the court.

only idiots think that, no offense.

every all star and borderline all star player in this league has high bball iq. it's impossible to be one without it.

A lot of AllStar players have been accused of having a low bbIQ. Mostly the me first hero ball players. And certainly most bigs.

Show me any sample where it is widely accepted that doesn't fit my description.
