Just started kung fu at Silly Joe's Self Defense. I'm loving it so far. I've learned how to call the police on my cell phone.

Let's say I am an attacker, first thing I do is slam your cell phone against a brick wall, what do you do?

Kick you in the balls and run, duh. Do they teach you how to disable a suspect in rolling around on the ground class?

In that situation I'd probably resort to my wing chun.

You actually have the bigger advantage if you're already on the ground and know what you're doing.

I feel like I need to be honest here: I don't really know wing chun.

There, I said it.

I'll be honest too: I don't study at Silly Joe's, I take karate at the Y.

That's one of my favorite things about BJJ! Watching smaller dudes regularly tap big dudes is awesome. I rolled with a woman who was probably 110lbs and a 14 year old blue belt within my first week of BJJ and it was really enlightening. Size and strength are obviously huge advantages, but a much smaller person who even understands the fundamentals of BJJ can make a bigger person very uncomfortable.

Just started rolling recently. Man, what a fun experience. It really makes you respect how good some people are, especially in terms of their guard game. On the flip side, I'm getting swept from every position by smaller dudes. My guard sliced through like butter, etc.

Humbling, but awesome. :)

Props to you judo dudes in this thread.

That is a rough art. Didn't know what I was getting into going in...but I dig it.

I decided to take up boxing at 30 and really loved it. I was building up the sparring towards my first fight when I ruptured a muscle in my thumb/hand. I was ok with the fact that I had to quit and reasoned that it was for the bes tgiven my age and the wife's nagging but now months later I'm really bummed out. Follow your dreams kids and get it done before you get too old! :(

You started years later than most would recommend, now you are quitting because you are a few months behind? Get back after it, AB!

Nah the injury is real bad, it needs surgery and a lot of rehab. It's just not something I can fit in right now. I'll keep the dream alive of entering one of those white collar boxing things when I'm 35 or so and have had time to fix it. I'm mostly bummed because I've lost all of my motivation to work out. I can still lift and hit a bag as long as I'm really careful with my left but I don't have a goal to work towards so I CBF.

It's better to the point where I can do most things other than open stubborn jars and things like that so I'm not crippled or anything. I play basketball with it taped up. (never had a jump shot so it isn't a big deal) :) Back on thread topic, I've had a heap of people say I'm mad for getting punched in the head for a hobby but to me the idea of rolling around with dudes who can snap your limbs really scares the **** out of me. I'd never, ever consider doing any combat sport that had me leaving my feet!

Good to hear, pal.

The bolded is the key. All combat sports, all martial arts, so you have to be responsible with it. All dangerous in their own way.

That said, you crazy for lettin' yo-self get punched in da face!

I've got long arms and throw straight, I got mostly hit by hooks to the side of the head. I'm still pretty enough. :D
