Broussard also said that the Magic would love to get Doc Rivers out of Boston to coach the team now that Stan Van Gundy is out.

Coach Doc would be awesome.

Does shaq help or hurt our chances with phil jackson? =)

I'd say hurt. They didn't end on good terms and I just don't see Phil coaching under Shaq.

That'd be my guess too.

I think I'd be ok with Shaq coming into the fold so long as the basketball ops split power with an experienced, more leveled personality. But Shaq and Dwight have so much in common -- joksters, stan haters, same nickname (well, shaq has a million), dominant big me-- there is a ton of common ground there. and if its one thing shaq could sell to dwight, its that he can build a team centered around a big man... because he knows exactly what he wanted around him. I know he had kobe and wade, but that would have be the message.

i had a massive debate with Hilltop about Doc last year. Doc's best years were when he had Thibs coordinating the league's best defense for him. since then his teams have dropped off significantly in that department, and Thibs' team has actually outperformed Doc in both of his seasons (regular season, that is).

i'd want Doc bringing a solid defensive assistant with him. i didn't think Doc was a very strong play maker, but i'm happy to give him credit for the offenses he's pushed out in Boston. i like their constant movement and screens, and i like that he knows how to get the most out of a PG. but defensively, i think Doc definitely needs help.

No thank you to Doc Rivers. I do not think he is a good coach. He is a great manager of egos, but he's proven without superior talent he just cannot get it done. And no offense but as long as Miami and OKC are in tact, Orlando will not have superior talent.

Also if Shaq gets the GM gig I am done with this ownership. I have not been a DeVos supporter for the past 4 or 5 years, and I've wished we had an owner who actually put competent people in decision making positions. A Shaq hire would be the last straw for me.

I don't want anything to do with Doc. Even if they did get him, what would we have to trade them to get him?

Does anyone else have a really bad feeling about this offseason. I don't trust this front office at all. Even if they are just giving Shaq a courtesy interview, they have to know how that looks to Dwight.

With every day I become more convinced that this offseason is going to be a nightmare.

+1. If you asked me to put money on the outcome, I'd say Dwight gets traded, and we as a fan base are not happy with the hires, draft and moves made. God I hope I am wrong, but I am by no means confident with how much of a mess this ownership has made of things as of late.

I'm just chilling and we'll see what happens. I'm not perched on the ledge ready to jump at every "news" report.

This is the mindset I have as well. Hopefully good things start to happen for us.

We're talking about Shaq possibly becoming our GM, but there's one guy I'd like to see given the opportunity to become a GM: Chris Webber.

He has a good vision on Basketball, never buys into the hype, doesn't wet his pants when talking about Miami (unlike 99% of his colleagues) .. He has mentioned that he wants to become a GM one day & is still relatively young.

I think he'd do a much better job than Shaq. I'm not against Shaq becoming a GM, I think he'd do good things too, but I'd interview CWebb too if we're interviewing Shaq ..

Maybe I'm the only one with this opinion, but I've always had this thought .. Just sharing

Those who know Skiles well insist he would crawl to Orlando to be the Magic’s coach. Skiles not only has a house in the Orlando area but he played five years with the Magic while becoming one of their most beloved players ever. More importantly, Skiles is one of Richard DeVos Sr.’s all-time favorites. DeVos is the owner of the Magic. It’s hardly a secret DeVos wants an NBA title in the worst way and has to realize it would be foolish at this stage — especially if all-world center Dwight Howard remains in the Magic Kingdom — to bring in an untested young coach instead of a proven, quality coach like Skiles. Hiring Skiles would also be a p.r. bonanza for the Magic as their fans most certainly would embrace a Skiles’ “homecoming.’’

Who will be the next one to want to come to Orlando?

The mere mention of Shaq, even if he turns out to be something more than a courtesy candidate, surely (and sadly) overshadows the most interesting part of Broussard's notebook-on-TV report, which revealed that the Magic's secret dream is trying to find a way to convince Doc Rivers to leave the Boston Celtics to come back to Central Florida.

Now THAT makes sense. It's the longest of long shots with Doc only just finishing Year 1 of a new five-year, $35 million contract to coach the Celts, but Orlando's thinking there is steeped in sound logic. If they could somehow convince Rivers to rejoin the Magic -- even if Doc insisted on a management-only role -- Dwight would surely be wowed. And the number of true stars in the Magic Kingdom would instantly double.

Not true at all. The Celtics have been 2nd in defense in both 2010-2011 and 2011-2012. The only time they finished 1st was in the title run of 2007. I would say that the defense hasn't slipped a bit. If anything, Stan's defense is the one that has slipped. In the past 4 years we were 1st, T-1st, 3rd, 13th this year. It's not all about Dwight either. Our team used to close on shooters like crazy and now our entire D just looks lazy. That was what signaled to me that Stan had lost control of this team.

Looking for another draft pick?

Mavericks Looking For Lamar Odom Trade Partner To Clear 2012-13 Salary

While only a small portion of Lamar Odom's 2012-13 salary -- $2.4 million -- is guaranteed, for a team like the Dallas Mavericks that is trying to open up enough salary cap room to make a major free agent play, every dollar counts. ESPN New York's Ian Begley reports that the Mavericks will look to unload Odom before the team must waive him on June 29. Trading him would clear the $2.4 million minimum off the team's 2012-13 books; simply waiving him would leave that figure on the books, and the team would then be unable to trade the salary figure.

As such, the Mavericks will be looking for a team who can a) absorb Odom's full 2012-13 cap figure ($8.2 million) without sending guaranteed salary back, b) isn't concerned with tying up $2.4 million in empty salary, and c) likes whatever sweetener Dallas offers. Given that no team will likely forgo waiving Odom and pay him the full $8.2 million next season, trading for him guarantees that $2.4 million in empty salary.

Dallas does have young guards Rodrigue Beaubois and Dominique Jones, as well as its own No. 17 pick in the 2012 NBA Draft.
Mark Cuban, the team's owner, has also always been willing to contribute cash to deals; new NBA rules limit such payments in trades to an aggregate of $3 million over one salary cap season.

We'd either need to be under the cap or armed with a big enough TPE. JJ doesn't work straight up for Odom. We'd need a third team.

This is a definite stayaway. Best case scenario, we pay a guy 2 million not to play for us. LO was awful last year, and he won't play anywhere he (or his wife) doesn't want to. That limits him to NY and LA.

Now, this has become Shaq is pursuing the GM position; Orlando is just listening but not really interested.

Return to Orlando Magic
