Re: Raptors NBA Draft Thread: Perry Jones
I don't think PJIII will be a superstar and the team drafting him shouldn't need him to be to take him top 8 IMO. We're talking about a draft where 2-4 are MKG, Beal and Robinson, 3 guys who most have a hard time seeing even as all-star talents, unless it's in the Andre Iguodala, David West type of way.
Personally my prediction for PJIII is that he has a Bargnani like career. 20 points, 7 rebounds .53 TS% on a bad team, and a mountain of hate from other fans for being a one dimensional scorer who relies on high FGA on a bad team and playing defense and rebounding as bad as any big man. The flawed good player. My personal belief though is that drafting a Bargnani/Brook Lopez type career 8th is very good. I really like the idea of seeing the draft as "3 all-stars and 8 other starters in the 1st round". If you're picking 8th you should not be complaining about getting one of those starters instead of fluking out and getting the all-star. Bargnani and Lopez would be one of the 5 best players on any team in the league and top 3-4 on almost all of them. That's nothing to complain about.

It's going to be a glorious day... I feel my luck could change

When I was watching Josh Smith hit mid range jumpers and fade away, as well as attack with DECENT handles I saw a little PJ III. Anyone else see PJ III as a Josh Smith lite? or maybe I was enjoying the game too much that I'm getting ahead of myself.

If Josh Smith didn't impact the game defensively by challenging shots, stealing passes, and making passes... I could understand the comparison more but quite honestly, Josh Smith wouldn't be the household name he is if he never did any of those things.
Perry Jones is a non-existent shot blocker. His average per game over 40 minutes against smaller college players was 0.8/game. He'd barely have a steal over that same 40 minute span against college competition and his passing? He'd complete only 1.6 assists while turning it over more than 2.2 times. That's how little he contributes in the areas Josh Smith is most known for at the college level when his numbers are averaged out over 40 minutes! What kind of impact is he going to have against bigger, stronger players if he's asked to play either the 3 or the 4?
Unfortunately, I see him as a more muscular, athletic Charlie V/Marvin Williams mix. Still interesting at 8 but I think we can do better.

Josh Smith without defence, quite honestly, would lose a lot of value in the league to be honest. It's hard to imagine because his defence is so tied to his image, his game and his value at the moment.

Yeah I was talking about more of his offensive game, but yeah Josh Smith without defence is well...not that good haha. He has the length and wingspan, I really believe he needs a coach to light a fire under him, is it worth the risk at 8? I still think so. Either that or Lillard, depending how the draft sorts itself out. Thanks for the insight Helix!

chadfordinsider: Perry Jones is killing it in this workout. Playing as a 3. Speed, skill, explosiveness, soft jumper. Energy. Another Paul George?

Good news, this draft is officially 8 deep. We will pickup whoever bombs the workout.

Re: Raptors NBA Draft Thread: Perry Jones
Man, I'd love to take PJIII if it weren't for the comments he's made over the past year and half. He already said he'd be "upset" being drafted by Toronto because he doesn't "like going through customs"... and he's on record saying that he gets tired of being expected to be the best player on the court all the time... he seems too immature. Of course, he can do a lot to help himself by showing some maturity in workouts in the next month, but I highly doubt his feelings have genuinely changed. This guy can easily be a top 5 talent in the draft if he wanted to. He has some of the best potential in this draft - superstar potential.

The Toronto customs thing was a joke lol
And hey he had a chance to be a top 5 pick, heck maybe even top 3 in 2011. But he decided to stay at Baylor, even though his family was facing a very bad financial crisis, that doesn't seem immature to me. I think Casey can light a fire under him. He could be a steal at 8, if he hustles.

I actually lauhged.
But seriously, always liked his skills and argued that he was more of a 3 and would need to be one in order to become successful at all but I just hate his lack of heart. Just transplant a 1/4 of MKG's to him and I would be begging to draft him.

That operation sounds dangerous. I'd rather just draft MKG and hope he develops his corner 3 and can be a great #3 on a contending team.
Where's the D?

Of course lol
But MKG will be nowhere near #8+ in the draft. If we end up in the top 3 I absolutely believe that Gilchrist is the player that Colangelo will target (believe it or not). If I had to give my predictions on BC's draftboard sequence going in:
- We fluke into #1 obviously we take Davis
- Fluke into top 3 we'll target MKG
- Remain where we are then Colangelo will be working behind closed doors on trading our pick +a 2nd rd to get Harrison Barnes instead of Lamb (assuming Lamb even falls to us)
- That doesn't happen he drafts Lamb, if he's gone PJ3 (or pick is traded)
I don't see BC touching Sullinger, Waiters, Rivers, Lillard, Marshall etc unless the pick is very quickly traded after

If we don't win it all, I'm hoping we walk out of this draft with one of Lamb/PJIII

+1
The guys in between (TRob, MKG, Beal, Barnes, Drummond) have all been solid but the upside of Lamb and PJ3 are through the roof. Hearing what Ford just said about Jones playing the 3 and killing workouts by demonstrating his speed, skill, athleticism, and jump shot only reassures me of my earlier opinion that PJ3 could still be the best player in this draft. I hope if he still ends up slipping that it isn't past the Raptors.

Good idea. But just to be safe, I think we should draft Anthony Davis instead.

Re: Raptors NBA Draft Thread: Perry Jones
Im usually against drafting tweener forwards who have no 3 point shot because of the high bust
rate but PJ3 might be an exception for me if we stay at 8 and the main 7 are off the board.
Im not sure will be drafting a starter unless we get Barnes or MKG. If we draft PJ3 were gonna
have to sign or trade for a starting SF who can shoot the 3.

Ford just posted a video of footage from Waiter's workout, said he'll post a similar one of PJ3 tomorrow so we can see exactly what he did to impress him.

I'm a fan of drafting him at 8, over lamb too I think.
