Hawks fans - I posted this on a Bucks board and wanted to see what your take was? Where would you guys put Bogut now knowing what you know now- and your top 5?
Thanks
I will start off by saying at the time you couldn't argue with the Bucks taking Bogut- most teams would have went with the big man (maybe a few with Marvin). So this is no knock on the Bucks- can't blame them for bad luck. That said knowing what you know now- who would have been your top 5 if you could go back in time?
My Top 5
Chris Paul- no-brainer at the top spot, but then you could get some debates;
Andrew Bynum
Deron Williams
Danny Granger
David Lee
Of Note:
Ersan went to the Bucks with pick #36
Travis Diener went in the 2nd round #38
Monta Ellis went with pick #40

At that time If Paul was off the board, I woulda picked Deron Williams. After that draft we had soooo many PG problems, we tried everything: Tyrone Lue, Salim Staudermire, Speedy Claxton, Acie Law ect, we wasted so much money and even a lotto pick on these failed experiments. I wouldn't have been mad with Bynum but we needed a PG at that time and Bynum's knees still worry me

with hindsight, the 2005 draft hurts (just as bad as Koncak over Mullin, Karl Malone, Dumars, Schrempf), but their is not one scout that did not have Marvin ranked #1 overall. just look at any old report on the 2005 draft and every scout and GM and sports writer had Marvin ranked #1 over Bogut, CP, and Deron http://www.collegehoopsnet.com/Draft/2005prospect/index.htm
every scout said Marvin was a more athletic Carmelo Anthony with a good 3pt shot. and nobody cared that Marvin didn't start, because UNC has a tradition of sitting freshmen (like Vince, Worthy and MJ)
even without the back injury, Marvin just doesn't have the personality to be a star in the NBA. He plays great when Joe is out, but you can see that Marvin just wants to blend into the background and flat out doesn't care.
i think the biggest loser in the draft or most embarrassing are the Blazers. every scout had Marvin over Paul and Deron. alot of people could understand picking a center such as Bogut over a PG. but only the Blazers thought that Martell Webster is better than Chris Paul and Deron?!?!
when i watch Paul George, he reminds me alot of Marvin, a whole world of talent, he looks like a constant match up problem for the other team, but also looks like he doesn't care and has no personality, i can see Pacers fan getting annoyed with him 2 or 3 years from now for STILL not being aggressive enough.

With George he found an NBA niche right off the bat so I think Pacer fans will be more accepting of him as time goes. He's already a plus defender so his obvious offensive woes will be overlooked if he doesn't achieve much on that end.
It took Marvin most his career and we still can't really say what his niche is. He's a good defender but not spectacular. He's gained range on his jumper but it's still limited to spot up situations (he was much better getting it off on screens earlier in his career) and he's decent but should conceivably be consistently better rebounding.
If you would redo that draft I'd go in this order based on the totality of their accomplishments.
Paul
Deron
Bynum
Granger
David Lee
Bogut (injuries killled him and he had all but a few months of actual dominance that has overratted him since)
Monta
Louis Williams
Gortat
Felton
Frye
Ersan
Amir
Nate Robinson
Marvin
Blatche
Hak Warrick
Villanueva
Bass
CJ Miles
Maxiell
Kleiza

Pacers fans are already looking to trading Granger and looking to Paul George as being the new #1.
Gortat > Lee, Monta, Louis
Gortat > Lee, Monta, Louis

I'm a big Deron Williams fan. I would've drafted him some 6 years ago and still think he's the best player to come out that draft.
GO HAWKS.
