If we get Davis what to do with the logjam w/ bigmen

Post#1 » by bawizards » Fri May 25, 2012 4:04 am

If we win the lottery there will be a lot of men at the 4 and 5 positions. Davis, Nene, Booker, Seraphin, Vesley, Blatche. Hopefully we amnesty Blatche so that cuts him out. We could move Vesley to SF but we still kept him at PF even when Singletons play wasnt so impressive so I assume we plan on keeping him at PF. What do you think we can get for these guys? I think we maybe able to get a pretty good lottery pick for Nene that can be used for a guy like Lamb or maybe Beal if he slides a little but I love the vet leadership he brings. I dont see us giving up on Vesley. What would you want to do?

Blatche is more a big man emeritus comatosis, so that leaves Davis, Nene, Booker, Seraphin, and Vesley. My vote would be trade Booker, because it seems to me that his value is pretty high right now (unless teams perceive injury issues with him). I think he could get pretty decent commensurate value in a wing player or third guard. If the Wizards manage to fill wing positions through later draft picks and FA signings, I wouldn't care if they kept all five, since I like them all and who cares if you have too many decent bigs? When have the Wizards ever had that problem before?

I think Davis & Nene starting and Seraphin as the first big off the bench is a damn good front-line rotation that in time may be one of the very best in the league. There wouldn't be consistent minutes for a fourth big so I wouldn't be against trading both Vesely & Booker. We'd still have James Singleton as a guy that could be brought back to a backup PF in case we do.

I agree with this. I'd like to keep Booker though as a backup PF(with Searphin as the backup C). If he plays really well his value will only increase and then maybe we can package him for a quality 2/3.

Given that this team is the Wizards, and given that Nene has had a few long term stints in the MASH unit, and given the wear and tear that an uptempo team can put on Bigs, I wouldn't worry too much about having too many bigs. We could play 'em all, cycle them in and out as they need treatment, see how they develop, bring Davis along at whatever pace he is most comfortable, and listen for offers for whomever attracts attention.

On that front, Booker may not draw all that much attention alone, he's one of those solid role-player types who makes an easy sweetener throw-in piece on a larger deal, but not a core piece sought after by many. I do suspect someone would be willing to overpay for Vesely though.

At first, there would be no compelling need to trade any of them. Nene and Booker aren't the healthiest guys in the world; and Vesely, Davis and Seraphin aren't finished products yet and may not be quite suitable to log 36 minutes a night on Day 1. Keep them all, but start listening to offers.

Ultimately, as Davis and Seraphin prove that they are full time players, we would probably need to move one of Vesely or Booker. The way I see it, Vesely is pretty redundant with Davis. Both are a menace in the passing lanes and on the offensive boards with their long arms and quick feet, but Davis is obviously a lot more skilled on the offensive end. If one of Vesely or Booker must go, I'd prefer it to be Vesely because Davis will replace what he brings. Booker at least provides respectable outside shooting, some physicality, and the ability to man the SF position for a period of time if the matchups are right. He could still carve out 15-20 minutes a game as our 4th big man.

Also, my guess is that after another season, Vesely will have much more trade value than Booker. Booker is a solid player, but not really that much better than what teams can find from MLE free agents. If Vesely gets a little stronger and improves his shot a bit, he becomes a unique player that teams will really covet and we should be able to get a good wing in return.

And Dat2U is right that both Booker and Vesely can certainly be dealt if the return is good. We can get by with Nene, Davis, Seraphin and low cost free agents.

I'd see if the Knicks would do a s&t of Booker for Landry Fields.

It doesnt necessarily have to be the Knicks and Landry, I think we should be able to get a decent starting SG/SF from any team in cap hell who are looking for rookie scale guys for depth, they just came to mind first.

Well, in fairness, we took Mike Pence off their hands. Taking back Mahinmi is the least they can do.

If we get Davis, the other guys will decide, with their play, who should stay here long term and who shouldn't. There certainly would be no urgency to make a move seeing as Davis is what, 19?

Yes. Oy gavault(sp?), I want that problem! I wonder if Booker's value's gone up - just from looking at the Indy/Miami series - the value of having a tough guy who makes the other team think twice about being "overly physical". I don't think anyone wants to mess with Booker - just like nobody wants to mess with Haslem with Miami.

This makes no sense. Why not just sign Landry Fields without giving up Booker?

(I don't think Fields is very good so I wouldn't pay very much to sign him. But it's complete madness to actually give up assets for the right to overpay him.)

In order to maintain the cap flexibility needed to go after a near max contract free agent next season.

Exactly, I wouldn't trade any of 'em! Athletic, talented bigs are the most coveted asset in the league. Assuming we dump Blatche and Lewis we have plenty of room IMO. Take into consideration Nene's age and past health issues. Seraphin, Booker, and Vesely are still developing, and Davis is 19.

Nene and Davis starting at C and PF, with Seraphin, Vesely and Booker as the backups. I don't see the problem.

There really isn't a problem with Nene/Davis/Seraphin - since they presumably are good enough to earn major NBA minutes and can play both the 4 and the 5.

The issue is that Vesley(at least in the near future) is only a 4 as is Booker. They would presumably get only scraps of playing time. This would kill Booker's trade value and a lack of playing time would not be good for Vesley's development(also killing his potential trade value). I can see an argument for starting with all 5 on the roster, but I think you have to at least seriously consider trade offers for any of them and ending the season with all 5 on the roster would be a mistake(unless Davis is not making an impact in his first season and the depth is needed due to injuries).

A team a couple years further along in the same situation is Utah. They really need to deal big for small.

It's not a problem but if you are the Wiz and have this lovely issue, you make it known that you are looking for a quality shooting wing and let people try to blow you away with an offer.

Just to put a deal out there, if the Wizards landed Davis how about Vesely and Booker to the Bucks for Tobias Harris, Shaun Livingston, and a pick?
