NBA trades in May are a rarity, but the Golden State Warriors are trying to swing one with the Utah Jazz before Wednesday's draft lottery, according to sources briefed on the talks.
The Warriors, sources said, are attempting to complete a deal with the Jazz that ensures Golden State's lottery pick in June will stay in the Bay Area under any circumstances.
2012 NBA Draft: In Or Out?
Which college players have declared for the NBA draft? Chad Ford has the latest.
• Chad Ford: In/Out?
• 2012 NBA draft index
After an April coin flip, Golden State has a 72 percent chance of seeing its first-round pick fall within the top seven of Wednesday's lottery, which would allow the Warriors to keep the pick.
But the Warriors, sources say, are prepared to sacrifice a trade asset or two before Wednesday's lottery even takes place to make a deal with Utah that would wipe out the stipulations in place for the 28 percent possibility that the pick falls outside of the top seven.
Under the current terms, Golden State's pick must be conveyed to Utah if it's No. 8 or lower, as mandated by a previous trade with New Jersey in which the Warriors dealt a pick that the Brooklyn-bound Nets later sent to the Jazz as part of the Deron Williams blockbuster in February 2011.

Re: Jazz/Warriors still talking about deal for Ws to keep pi
hmmmmmm.........wonder what they will do?
One source with knowledge of the discussions described the chances of a trade by Wednesday as "likely." Yet it remains to be seen whether the teams can agree to a deal without involving current players, as Golden State apparently prefers.
Among the Warriors' options to retain their 2012 pick outright is offering Utah a combination of future draft considerations, cash and/or a relaxation of the current restrictions on Utah's rights to the pick in question in either 2013 or 2014. At present, Golden State's 2013 pick is top-seven protected and its 2014 pick is top-six protected.

Wonder if we would just extend the life of the pick as a first rounder.
The idea that if the Warriors continue to suck, this pick could turn into two second rounders has to scare the Jazz a little bit. Might be worth adding a few years onto the pick to make sure we get a first rounder, or severly lower the protection on the pick.

I just think this is so so idiotic.
If no one jumps the Warriors then the trade will look marginally good (because all we're getting is what, money? 2nd round picks?)
However if someone jumps the Warriors and we miss the #8 pick.. I just don't even know

Jazz seem to have the leverage here. W's are desperate to make sure they keep the pick. Jazz could make a deal that is better long term.

This is one of the strongest drafts in recent memory. There are going to be a lot of starters coming out of this draft and I think the Warriors know this. If I am the Jazz, I roll the dice unless they take off all restrictions to the pick in the future, give us the SA pick, and take on Bell.

Anyway, if i was Utah i'd gamble.... unless GS offer is a really good one

The Jazz really have to use some leverage here. Not some crap thing like Raja Bell and some protected 2nd round pick.

Re: Jazz/Warriors still talking about deal for Ws to keep pi
Warriors never said they were desperate to make a deal but they would be stupid not to engange into talks and seeing what the price is to get the pick back. We don't have that much leverage in reality. I think Warriors will probably do something like lowering protection on 2013 to top 3 protected and the SA pick.
Would I do that? No, I would gamble. But this is KOC we are talking about so ........

I think top 3 protected in 2013 and the SA Pick should get it done.

The Jazz are looking for a player or a guaranteed first. They aren't looking to hand out a mulligan.

Re: Jazz/Warriors still talking about deal for Ws to keep pi
It makes me think the jazz may feel confident that they can move into the draft with other assets outside of this pick.
What may be a possibility, if we can get the SA first is packaging it with this future GSW pick to move into the top 10 and still get a guy we want, essentially moving down a spot or two to make sure we still have a pick this year.

What team would trade this years low pick.....for next years pick + the late SA pick?

Both Portland and NO may be willing to part with thier later lottery picks in exchange for a future pick with lower protection and an additional first. The TPE could also come into play.
