I'm not a big fan of the holier-than-thou Christian thing, and not a fan of this incidente, but I am a huge fan of his fighting style and basically who he is as a person.

Give you head a shake, Jones, smarten up and stop trying to be something you are not.

A lot of athletes come back strong after something like this. But not a lot of athletes claim the greateness that he claimed prior (it is my destiny to be the best, you never have to worry about me doing anything stupid, etc). So those guys make a mistake, learn from it, and "become a better athlete and person" because of it (cliches abound).

What is Jones going to do? Well I was perfect before, made a mistake, and now I'm perfect again, trust me!

Nah, he has to admit he made a mistake, realize he was disingenuous before, acknowledge that, and move on with his life. Were all human, everyone makes mistakes, but its hard to have empathy if the person takes the holier than thou attitude about it. He def isn't off to a good start, lashing out at fans after he totals his car from being intoxicated (presumably).

I really hate how other sports are so Goddammed PC. I like how the UFC lets people be themselves and I would hate to see Dana White in a suit all the time coming up with PC answers to every question.

Jon Jones lost himself a ton of money. There was probably a clause in his Budweiser contract stating that he wouldn't get a DWI. Other companies will be weary to hire Jones as a spokesperson and the deals he'll get now will be for less money. It's a shame because Jones had a great opportunity to become the first UFC fighter to bring the UFC into the mainstream and be in a ton of commercials. He's the son of a preacher who caught a mugger hours before becoming the youngest UFC champion ever. He's dynamic and unpredictable and after cleaning out the LHW division he'd move up to HW for a superfight that might have been on Fox.

If there's a parallel universe where Jon Jones never got a DUI, he'd retire a much richer man, with the UFC being much more mainstream.

Stars have come back from much worse mistakes (see: Chris Brown). Jones will be fine.

My argument was never that Jones would be fine. My argument was the Jones had the potential to be one of the top 10 most popular athletes in America and really make MMA a mainstream sport.

Jon Jones can be popular, but people can say "I don't want to see a guy who drinks and drives beat up other guys in the cage." Now I think that Jones' ceiling for popularity in America is like Allen Iverson in 2001. He can be incredibly popular among young people and people who are into the sport, but the average older sports fan won't care for him too much.

I dunno, I don't really follow sports outside of NBA basketball and MMA, so I don't know how this is being played up on places like sportscenter, but my gut says that mainstream people won't care about this. In fact, mainstreamers are probably oblivious to the irony of his earlier statements, so he's just some fighter guy who got a DUI. MMA has to become much more popular for any of it's athletes to become one of the top 10 most popular athletes in the US and even that list is so fluid.

Anyway, dude is a sick fighter and athlete, but there definitely seemed like there was something phony about him, so it isn't a real shock. Definitely think it's being overblown based on how current it is, though.

The way Jones has carried himself the last couple years just rubs me the wrong way, I used to be a huge fan but now he's turning into the LeBron James of MMA. I didn't even know that he was a snitch until this thread. That just takes it to another level for me.

The DUI doesn't really change anything for me. Like someone mentioned earlier it is a very stupid and dangerous action and someone with his wealth that could afford a cab anywhere should probably get a little more heat for doing it than an everyday person but I also agree with the comment that it is something many otherwise good people have done in a moment in stupidity. As long as he learns his lesson and doesn't do it again this will be way down the list on the reasons Jon Jones is going to be an MMA super villain.

It just seems like another case of too much too soon, the way he has reacted to the criticism to getting the DUI is a prime example of an egomaniac.

Everybody loved LeBron for the first 5-6 years and then the worm turned after some poor decisions and statements, it's just an analogy and I used him because the vast majority of posters here are basketball fans. I'm in no way comparing a DUI where someone could've got seriously hurt or died to "I'm taking my talents to South Beach".
