Did Hutchison Reach Back For 95 Tonight On His Fastball?

Post#1 » by Wally West » Tue May 29, 2012 3:02 am

@LottOnBaseball

Farrell said he'd never seen Hutchison throw 95 before. "When he's at that velocity, he's almost a different pitcher."

Don't know if this was worthy of it's own thread but if he really did touch 95 miles tonight on his fastball, there's reason to believe that there might be more in the tank in the future at his age.

He hit 95 regularly tonight. Almost every fastball looked to be 93-95.

Because that would be the first time ever in his career that he's touched 95. At his young age of 21 and with his frame, there's reason to believe that there might be more in the tank.

He sat 93-95 for the most part this game. His velocity was definitely the highest it's been since we've seen him.

hutchison can light up the gun for triple digits, he's just holding back to become more of a pitcher than a thrower

this kid in his prime will be locating 103 mph cutters right on the black

I hope not. Unless his max effort is something ridiculous like 110 MPH, I want him holding back and living around the mid 90s area where he can more than get the work done.

Yeah, Hutch will make Chapman look like Cecil.

But how many more innings is he gonna get this year? Who can we count on to fill the #5 slot in our meaningful games in August/September. Dustin? The aforementioned Cecil? Oswalt?

i'm more curious about his long-term prospects. i haven't always been sold on him. he's young, but up until tonight, he seemed like a 4th-5th starter at best.

Yeah, that was unexpected. Would be very helpful to him if he could keep doing it.

I thought most generally assumed home stadium radar guns are usually 1-2 mph faster? Unless it's a scout making the statement, I'm taking it with a grain of salt.

On the otherhand, if he was actually hitting 95, then there is hope he can repeat last night's performance. Either way, really enjoyed how he and Mathis worked the O's lineup

He said in post-game comments that it was about getting his release point right for the first time this season.

Every game is a home game for somebody. Unless your'e suggesting they tweak the gun in between every half inning, which would seem like way more trouble than it's worth.

I haven't really heard too much of tweaking at any other stadium except for Kauffman where it runs 3-4 MPH hot IIRC.

Here's the PitchFX. Average speed of his four seamer was 92.8. So he was sitting 92-94 for the entire game.

http://www.brooksbaseball.net/pfxVB/pfx ... 571800.xml

For comparison his start against the Yankees his average four seam velocity was 90.66. That is a significant difference. If he can maintain the increased speed that means he could be more than a backend starter.

He usually doesn't sit around 95 but he hit 95 plenty of times last year in the minors. This isn't new.
