Kevin Garnett Could Consider Signing With Lakers

Image

By Larry Brown May 29, 2012

Kevin Garnett is currently the fourth-highest salary earner in the NBA, but he’ll be a free agent after the season and likely to sign for far less than the $21.2 million he’s making. There have been reports that the Nets will be interested in signing him, and it’s possible he and the Lakers could come to an agreement.

During an interview with Mark Willard on 710 ESPN Radio in LA over the weekend, Stephen A. Smith discussed the possibility of KG signing with the Lakers and said that’s something the team should explore.

Smith pointed out that Garnett lives in Southern California in the offseason and that he’s friends with Kobe Bryant, so he believes it’s a possibility, especially if Pau Gasol is gone.

Strengthening the speculation is Garnett’s admission last year that he was pretty close to signing with the Lakers as a free agent in 2007.

Smith also says the Lakers would consider bringing back Lamar Odom. He says Odom “desperately” wants back with the Lakers, and that Mike Brown desperately wants him too. Smith says Odom would take the veteran minimum to return to the Lakers.

There were some other good nuggets in the interview such as the confirmation that Dwight Howard doesn’t want to come to Lakers, and the belief that Deron Williams will strongly consider remaining with the Nets.

KG is still an asset and will be able to help a team for at least another season, so it would make sense for the Lakers to be interested. I just know that wouldn’t sit well with Boston fans if he left to go play for the enemy, but it’s not like they haven’t seen that before.

gasol for lowry, martin, pick

drafted Terrence Ross (i think he could be good Kobe's successor)

martin for beasley and milicic

bynum for howard?

sign KG, Hill, Sessions

s5: lowry/kobe/artest/kg/bynum (howard)
bench: sessions/ross/beasley/hill/darko

great defensive s5 (with howard is amazing), very athletic bench with scoring

Ehh this would sound lovely 2 years ago but KG is really on his last leg. The Lakers need to upgrade in shooting and athleticism before anything. Jordan Hill, Steve Novak and Michael Beasley should be first priority outside of pursuing the Dwill or Dragic.

We have to get younger! Anyone who listens to Stephen A. Smith's advice should have their head examined.

Kevin Garnett would whip Andreww Bynum into shape. Playing alongside KG would do wonders for Andrew Bynum but I still don't see KG willing to take such a big pay cut.

the big story in that link is this:

There were some other good nuggets in the interview such as the confirmation that Dwight Howard doesn’t want to come to Lakers, and the belief that Deron Williams will strongly consider remaining with the Nets.

i'll post it in the other thread as to not derail this one

with the CBA I don't see the possibility. No sign and trade allowed plus that article seems to suggest that effin A Smith is speculating without a real basis to support that KG would consider the Lakers now. and after all that said would the Lakers want an aging KG regardless of how well he is playing now.

sign and trades aren't disallowed for tax paying teams til next off-season. still available this off season.

http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q88

Starting in 2013-14, the team receiving the player cannot be above the "apron" ($4 million above the tax level) after the trade.

Trade Bynum for a PG or Pau for a SF who can play two ways. Sign KG and Lamar (at minimum), bring Sesh off the bench and most importantly don't sign any long-term deals unless with franchise players (Deron) and we're on our way for another run.

what? we have more chance of landing Deron AND Dwight than we do of signing KG as a FA, gtfoh. it's like people think players are robots. KG is a Celtic-lifer. there is absolutely no way in hell he would sign w/ the P&G. and if he did, i would be ecstatic, but i would lose all respect for him.

Did i reference a source... Believe it or not, there are people who share ideas within organizations to their friends/family members... Howard would have forced the issue before resiging and losing leverage... Bynum did play well but a new coach and some trades should suffice Howard for another year... New Jersey would rather have salary cap room than Gasol or Bynum (decent kid named Lopez plays the 5)... I am just trying to be realistic... LO makes sense all day long... KG lives in Malibu & almost came to LA in '07... He is "loyal" but i do recall him leaving Minny...

That would be the weakest frontcourt in the West as far as contenders go too.
