Clippers name Gary Sacks VP of Basketball Operations
First I hear on the radio that Neil Olshey is a 'finalist' for the GM job in Portland- didn't know he was considering other jobs, considering he's done a great job here. I really credit him more than anyone else for the recent resurgence, without him I'm not sure we are able to complete the Chris Paul trade, and make other nice moves/signings that really helped last year.
Now I see a RealGM headline that Olshey has been working month to month, because Sterling is reticent to give him a deal? WTF?!?!?
Olshey is the first real GM we've had in a long time. This not completely a slam on Elgin Baylor- I always felt his main duty was to be Sterling's lapdog, which meant we were always reactive with personnel moves and never had a real plan of any kind (other than making money I guess.)
Every time I've heard Olshey on the radio I've been impressed- this man knows basketball and has made very good moves as our GM. If we lose him, it could be a big step backwards IMO. If Sterling is not willing to extend him, then he's not going to be willing to pay for any real GM talent (which is exactly what we'll be losing.)

Re: Neil Olshey - WTF?!?!?!?!?
He's been without a contract for about a year. He did interview with Portland last year (Septemberish), and is being given a second look by them. Supposedly, there are 4 finalists for the position and the decision makers (Paul Allen, Bert Kolde and Larry Miller) all favor a different candidate.
With the contract (or lack therof), it was a mutual decision between Olshey and Sterling. He has the freedom to pursue other opportunities if he chooses to do so. I'm not too concerned about him fearing for a lack of job security due to not having a contract, since Baylor was without a contract for the majority of his tenure. The most concerning issue at hand is that Neil is underpaid imo. Many have speculated that Neil is setting his market value through this process for Sterling to match, but that remains to be seen. For what he has done in the last year which includes for coming in 3rd for EOTY, he deserves nice raise.
I've been a Neil supporter ever since he was giving the full-time job and I would hate to see him leave. He's been instrumental in turning around this team's future outlook.

CLIPPERS REACH AGREEMENT IN PRINCIPLE WITH NEIL OLSHEY
The Los Angeles Clippers announced today that an agreement in principle has been reached between the team and Vice President of Basketball Operations Neil Olshey. As usual, no terms of the agreement were made public.
The 2011-12 campaign marked Olshey's second season as the Clippers' Vice President of Basketball Operations and his ninth overall season with the organization. Olshey began his career as Director of Player Development prior to the start of the 2003-04 season and served as an assistant coach during the 2004-05 campaign before holding the title of Director of Player Personnel from 2005-08. Olshey was promoted to the role of Assistant General Manager prior to the start of the 2008-09 season, holding that position for two seasons until being named Vice President of Basketball Operations prior to the start of the 2010-11 campaign.
After spearheading an exhaustive search that brought the Clippers new head coach Vinny Del Negro prior to the start of the 2010-11 season, Olshey retooled the roster prior to the start of the 2011-12 campaign. During a six-day span, Olshey added two-time All-Star Caron Butler, five-time All-Star Chauncey Billups, re-signed athletic center DeAndre Jordan and through the biggest trade in franchise history, brought in All-Star point guard Chris Paul. In addition, without a first round selection in the 2011 NBA Draft, Olshey was still able to solidify the Clippers bench by nabbing Georgia teammates Trey Thompkins (37th overall) and Travis Leslie (47th overall) in the second round. In addition to these moves, Olshey made three key acquisitions with the free agent signing of veteran big men Reggie Evans and Kenyon Martin and the trade deadline deal to acquire swingman Nick Young from the Washington Wizards. Adding these players to the returning core of 2011 NBA Rookie of the Year Blake Griffin, All-Star point guard Mo Williams, 2011 All-Rookie Second Team guard Eric Bledsoe and solid rotation players Randy Foye and Ryan Gomes, the Clippers had one of the deepest rosters in the NBA this season.

Ramona Shelburne implies that Andy Roeser was the one that made sure that Neil was taken care of.

I have to give a lot of credit to Andy, Sterling must really approve of Andy's opinion. VDN was Sterling's choice, Olshey wanted Duane Casey coach of the Raptors. Sterling is still a thorn in the side of the franchise but it does seem he is really allowing his basketball reps really do their jobs now and not just have a yes man like Elgin Baylor who just enjoyed having the job. Now lets pulling of a Bledsoe, Butler, Gomes, Jordan & 2 Future 1st Round Picks for Turkoglu & Howard, right now!!!

Don't get me excited! What are the possibilities of that trade going down? CP3, Blake, Dwight Howard is a nasty combo! Re-sign Evans for some dirty work to back up Dwight. We'd obviously have to add depth at the point guard spot (where we previously had a log jam).
CP3/Billups
Young/Billups/Leslie
Turkoglu/Young
Griffin/Trey Thompkins
Howard/Evans

It's great that we secured him coming back. The guy is definitely one of the better GM's in the league, and he's been with our organization for the past 9 seasons. Good to see that there's some level of loyalty/commitment involved.
The way he communicates and carries himself is really impressive. I've seen those interviews with him on LACTV, and the guy talks like a big time CEO. Just having that guy as the GM makes you feel confident. He's made a few questionable moves, but overall, I think he's been critical to our successful turnaround.

ESPNLA's Ramona Shelburne joins Mark Willard to talk about Lamar Odom chances of rejoining the Lakers, GM Neil O'Shay resigning with the Clippers and the Kings chances to win the Stanley Cup.
ESPN Radio
Ramona gives some insight into Neil signing a long-term contract with the Clippers. When it was said that the Donald was willing to let him walk, she said that extended from him being pissed about being swept in the 2nd round.
I know he wants to win. He is not getting any younger, but Rome was not built in a day. It's great that people like Paul and Billups come in here to raise the bar for expectations, but it is still a process that we must go through. We took our lumps this year, but our inexperienced key players will have a better idea of what it takes to move forward and what will be required of them. They heard about how the playoffs were different, but just expected it to be basketball. They found out that it is more than that and hopefully they will prepare themselves in the offseason to make the necessary adjustments.
As far as Neil and even Vinny go, they have more time for preparation. In November of last year, we weren't even sure there was going to be a season, let alone the fact that a month later we would be trading away a couple starters and acquiring one of the league's best players. There was hardly training camp/preseason to work the bugs out. We had to learn on the fly. There wasn't even time to practice during the season, so they had to work through their issues as they went along. By playoff time, the physicality of the Memphis series really wore us down. Guys were playing hurt and others were playing injured. This go around will be different. There will be an intended purpose and we'll probably go even further provided we remain healthy.

Neil can sell ice to an Eskimo and that's both a good thing and a bad thing. It's the reason why EJ and Kaman were so pissed about being traded. It's also the reason why we have CP3.
I think he knows what he is doing for the most part. Who knows, maybe even the Gomes signing will turn out to be a positive (that's assuming he is traded this year). He got Nick Young with Brian Cook, just imagine what he can get for Gomes lol.
There's likely going to be some significant changes to the roster between now and the end of the summer, but I feel confident that he's going to pull out the right moves. Players around the league probably were a little skeptical last year, but see that we can be at least a top 8 team or so and will probably be more willing to take a chance on us.

Well played by Neil.
Using that open position in Portland to get himself a nice contract while keeping on working with the roster he created himself.
Let's see if he can take us to the next step and fill our holes with players that really fit CP3 and Blake.

Neil is awesome, the only thing that makes me less furious about Del Fail coming back is that Neil is also on board.
If we didn't re-sign him, my goodness..... Don't even want to think about it.

CLIPPERS AND OLSHEY AGREE TO PART WAYS
The Los Angeles Clippers and Neil Olshey today mutually agreed to end discussions concerning Olshey's future with the team. An agreement in principle, reached and announced on June 1, will not be completed and the two parties have agreed to part ways.
"Circumstances have obviously undergone some movement since our announcement Friday. In light of that, we want to wish Neil well and acknowledge his contributions during the time he spent with the Clippers," said Clippers' President Andy Roeser.
A search for a replacement is already underway, headed up by Roeser. In the interim, all responsibilities pertaining to the team's basketball operations will be absorbed by Roeser, Head Coach Vinny Del Negro, and Clippers' Director of Player Personnel Gary Sacks.
