What does this even mean??? This is so corny to me when people use the term "pure point guard".

Most people see the Roses and Westbrooks of the world as "combo guards", "SGs in PG bodies" and "scoring PGs", so they aren't considered "pure".

Huh? Cousy was a terrible shooter.

A point guards primary duties are to distribute the ball and pressure the ball... he's pretty darn good at both and he's a terrific communicator.

It means he thinks pass first at all times.

inability to score

I think the whole "scoring point guard" "pure point guard" schtick gets overplayed. I don't see Rondo being a top three point guard due to his explicit inability to consistently make a mid-range to three-point jump shot. He is a great play maker however, but that does not compensate for his scoring inabilities.

What if a point guard has to play on a team where they are the only option that can consistently create their own shot and their primary objective becomes to create their own offense first and then look for others to distribute to. Would they be considered a "pure point guard"?

Give any PG 10 feet to operate and they'd rack up 10+ assists playing in a system that has as many set plays as the Celtics.

Pg supposed to get the best possible shot for the team. His job is to run a good offense and make everyone around him score easier.
Sometimes that means you the pg have to score and rondo isnt capable of that. Him passing up wide open shots hurt the offense and is reflected on the type of offenses he runs. I dont hes ever ran a top 5 offense.
I think boston was ranked 21 in offense or something!

Rondo racks up a lot of assists because garnett/allen/pierce/bass all make jumpshots at a good %. hes a lot of players who make shots. For eg look at okc

Okc: sefo, perks, ibaka dont want to shoot harder for westy to get assists.
Rondo is a good player but over rated because he racks up assists on a jumpshooting team.

Pgs that are better thn him

cp3/rose/westbrook/ and maybe dwillz
Nash is too old

Show me an example? A pass first point guard is always going to be a pass first point guard. He excels at making his teammates better at all costs.

Example: Derrick Rose... A point guard's primary objective is to ensure that his team scores and the offense is at least competent no matter how the task gets done. There should be no titles such as "pass first" or "shoot first" when a point guard is fulfilling a task that is needed on their specific team.

You're not serious are you? Since when has Rose ever been a pass first PG?

First off where did you see me state that he was a pass first PG? Secondly, what does pass first mean? Does that mean every time down court, Derrick looks to pass first because if so that point guard really wouldn't be a good decision maker. A point guard should operate according to the system they play in and the talent around them. Derrick is one of the examples of a point guard that fulfills a team need. He has to look to score first because he is the team's sole play-maker. He also averages 8 assists a game so

With posts like this, it's hard to take you seriously bro! First off, how is Derrick Rose not a point guard? What does how many triple doubles someone amasses have to do with anything? How is Deron Williams a shoot first point guard? SMH!

OP is trolling obviously.

Rondo has been a Top 5 point guard for many years. Those who dont agree are ignorant or just plain in denial.

Carry on with the trolling though.
