Is Pekovic the best C in Wolves history?

Post#1 » by Narf » Mon Jun 4, 2012 10:49 pm

Just for fun, I figured I'd see how high people rank him after his first 2 seasons.
Who would you rank close to Pek? Higher than Pek?
You can change your answer if someone persuades you differently.

Laettner actually spent a lot of time at center for them, so he's probably close. Other than that there was the strangely bad Luc Longley, Rasho, and... hmm, that's all I can think of that were of any value.

*Edit: I guess Dean Garret had the season of feeding off Marbury. Which was still pretty bad.

I think I rate it
1) Pek
2) Al Jefferson
3) Laettner (Blah)
4) Theo Ratliff?
5) Marc Jackson?

Pek has averaged 9/5 in two seasons. Al averaged 20/10 in three seasons. Theo played 10 games in his Wolves career.

I'd say something like

Al Jefferson
Nikola Pekovic
Ervin Johnson
Rasho Nesterovic
Michael Olowokandi / Mark Blount

Center is clearly the weakest position in franchise history, with PF and PG being the best. What is 3rd, SG or SF?

easily SF, Wally, Hassell, Sam Mitchell, KG, Tony Campbell

SG is as brutal as C I think: Peeler, Doug West, JR, Spre? Ridnour?

I remember when we traded for Marc Jackson and I thought it was an insane super steal gift from god.
I also remember when we drafted Loren Woods in the 2nd and I thought it was an insane super steal gift from god. I suck at evaluating talent.

Luc Longley needs to be in there somewhere maybe...

Jefferson
Pekovic
Rasho
Longley
Johnson

Pek has the potential to be the best C in franchise history but he hasn't played enough games yet, imo. If he can sustain what he was doing before the bone spurs got him, then he's #1 in my book but that remains to be seen.

I should note that I view Big Al as more of a PF/C who played C out of necessity. Pek is more of a true C in my book so, even though I doubt he will ever put up 20/10, I would give him the nod over Big Al. (don't know if that makes sense but whatever)

I would consider both Hassell and Tony Campbell shooting guards.

Here's the evolution of thge Wolves center position. It was hard to determine whether some were Cs or PFs, so if theres someone you want me to add or subtract, let me know (example: Jefferson and Laettner both PFs who were forced to play C):

Randy Breuer - 10.2/5.7, 5.9/4.7, 5.4/4.2
Felton Spencer - 7.1/7.9, 6.6/7.1, 4.1/4.6
Christian Laettner - 18.2/8.7, 16.8/8.6, 16.3/7.6, 18.0/6.9
Luc Longley - 4.3/3.9, 5.8/4.4, 6.6/6.0
Sean Rooks - 10.9/6.1, 6.8/4.2
Andrew Lang - 8.8/6.1
Dean Garrett - 8.0/7.3, 5.5/5.2, 2.0/1.8, 2.5/3.1, 1.0/1.6
Stanley Roberts - 6.2/4.9
Rasho Nesterovic - 4.0/4.0, 5.7/4.6, 4.5/3.9, 8.4/6.5, 11.2/6.5
Marc Jackson - 4.6/3.9, 5.5/2.9
Ervin Johnson - 1.9/3.5, 1.6/2.5
Michael Olowokandi - 6.5/5.7, 5.9/5.2, 6.0/5.6
Mark Blount - 10.2/4.8, 12.3/6.2
Al Jefferson - 21.0/11.1, 23.1/11.0, 17.1/9.3
Theo Ratliff - 6.3/3.9
Darko Milicic - 8.3/5.5, 8.8/5.2, 4.6/3.3
Nikola Pekovic - 5.5/3.0, 13.9/7.4

I think what makes him the best is he is a true center. If he can stay healthy next season there will be no question he is the best we have seen.

you could even put Eddie Griffin in there too since he played next to KG often times

at any rate, Reggie Slater was/is/will be the best center in Wolves history

Dean Garrett!!!!!

Dude was amazing in NBA live 98, some sort of glitch in the game made it so he would rebound anything that came near him, he beat everyone.
"That's why the last two years weren't guaranteed," Walsh said. "Either way, he knew it could have happened either way."

Al Jefferson wasn't a true center, but he played mostly center in his three seasons as a wolf, and he was amazingly good (before the injury).

I can't understand why Big Al doesn't get all the praise that he deserves from the fans here. Of course Pekovic is a very solid player, but Jefferson is hands down the best center in Wolves' history.

I still think of him as a PF, but if he is a C then he is the reigning champ. But Pek's got him in sight and is closing fast.
