JP Morosi suggests Escobar for Balfour

Post#1 » by Wo1verine » Mon Jun 4, 2012 10:34 pm

Morosi was on the fan590, and suggested a Yunel for Balfour trade and would 'argue' the trade makes us a better team! What do you guys think?
I personally wouldn't trade one of the better SS for a RP just to open up a spot for Hech. In fact, i don't think i'd move Esco period at this point! Unless he was part of a deal that got us a masher or top of the rotation SP.

That's the worst trade scenario ever. Escobar is a top 5 SS over the last 4 years and likely still has good years left in him.

Trading a position player for a reliever is stupid unless he is David Cooper level. I'd do Cooper for Balfour.

Seems like that trade would hurt us more than help.

It makes me wonder if Morosi actually watches baseball.

That's horrible.

I wouldn't even trade Yunel Escobar for a healthy Mariano Rivera going into his prime even knowing that he was going to be one of the most dominant closers of this generation...

Yeah, obviously not gonna happen. Franchise shortstop for a scrub reliever

I don't know why Morosi felt like embarrassing himself like that.

You wouldn't trade Yunel for Rivera circa 1996? That's crazy talk. Rivera had 52 WAR in front of him at that point. There's no way that Yunel has that in his whole career.

Yunel has 18 through 5 seasons; it took Rivera 9 seasons to accumulate that many WAR, a span of time which includes his two best seasons.

For the WPA though, I'd go with Rivera, and it's not that close. As much as stat-heads (myself included) like to look at WAR and black-and-white numbers, Rivera has simply been much more valuable than his WAR indicates since he is so reliable in such high-leverage situations. There was no way to know back in 1996 that he would be this good and this healthy and this reliable for 15 years in a row, though. So... I wouldn't have traded 2012 Yunel for 1996 Rivera.

I assume Morosi believes Escobar can be replaced by Hech, but that is no reason to give Escobar away for essentially a bag of peanuts.

I'm sure that Escobar can fetch much more than Balfour on the open market if it comes down to it.

Was this a straight up deal or was there other pieces coming our way? Surely he wasn't implying a straight up deal, but I didn't hear the sound bite.
