OT: Halladay Wants To Finish Career With Phillies

Post#1 » by LittleOzzy » Thu Jun 7, 2012 3:30 pm

Roy Halladay's shoulder issue clouds his future with the Phillies.

He'll miss six-to-eight weeks, which will likely cause the right-hander to fall short of benchmarks needed to trigger a $20 million option for the 2014 season.

Despite the fact, Halladay is still committed to Philadelphia.

"It's a year-and-a-half away," Halladay said. "Ultimately, my goal is to finish my career with the Phillies and win a World Series here. Some of those things are not fully in my control, but my intent is to play here and finish my career here and be here as long as I can."

I think he has to say that at this point. He is a very devoted player.
He stayed with Toronto so long, and I don't think it was an easy decision for him to leave.
I don't think he would want to move again.

If he does go anywhere, it would be back here, but I think he is there to stay.

The only way I think he would leave is if Philly openly admits that they are rebuilding, and Toronto is contending.

I wonder whose hat he'll wear to the Hall of Fame.

I don't think it will matter if he wins a World Series in Philly (as it didn't matter for guys like Molitor or Winfield), but if he has his best years stats-wise in Philly, it may not be so clear cut.

I would love for him to be one of the pieces we add going for a WS run. By the time we were ready he's probably not gonna be the ace he is now, but he could be solid as a 2/3 starter.

A WS would be awesome in Toronto again, even better with Roy on the team.

I could see the Phillies attempting to trade him in the next year or so before his contract is up. It won't be fully up to him whether he stays (although he does have a partial no-trade clause).

He pitched in Toronto for 12 years and in Philly for 2 and a bit. At the moment, that's not much of a question.

Including the extension, he'll have pitched 6 years in Philly by the time he retires. If he were to bag a World Series or two, and pitch the best years of his life, I could see arguments being made by some (though I'd obviously disagree with them).

it's not his choice which hat he wears in... the Hall chooses

Wow. I always thought he would come back for his last year in his career. It kind of hurts.

I'm still holding out hope that he'll come back to Toronto someday. I'm sure he wouldn't be against it especially when we undoubtedly become better than the Phillies. Would be a fairy tale ending.

Hah, part of the rotation with Drabek, D'Arnaud catching him, and Gose erasing his mistakes. Nice dream.

What are you talking about? He's only under contract with the Phillies through 2013. That would be four seasons in total (though he's going to miss about a 1/4 of this one). He's also 35 years old on a declining team...I doubt his best years are ahead of him.

Again, there's really no question at this point which team he'd be under if he makes the HOF. Maybe wait and see where we are in another half-decade. There's a very good chance he won't even be with the Phillies beyond the 2013 season.

I thought it was all about winning a WS? Honestl,y the Phils current window might last a couple of more years, then they are rebuilding. I think it's quite likely that the Phils would want to move Halladay at that point. Unless he resigns to something really cheap the interest might not be there from Philly's end of the table. Roy had those two NH/PGs but they haven't won the WS while he has been there. The organization team might not be as attached to him, as he is to them.

Philadelphia's core is old and injury prone. Their best under-30 player is a free agent after this season (Hamels). I don't know how much mileage they have left with that group. If you look at just their guaranteed contracts next season, they owe $104M to six players (Halladay, Lee, Papelbon, Howard, Utley, and Rollins). That drops to $74M for four players after 2013 (Halladay's option does not vest and Utley becomes a FA). It is going to be very difficult for them to stay elite and keep their payroll at a reasonable level. Once you factor teams like Washington and Atlanta ripe with young talent, it's going to interesting to see what the Phillies do. It is quite possible that 2013 might be their last real chance.

Halladay is loyal and it wouldn't surprise me if he takes less money to stay in Philly, but I have a glimmer of hope that he comes back to Toronto either via trade (if Philly gives up next season) or via free agency. We just have to hope Philly sinks over the next two years (and hope Hamels doesn't find his way to the Bronx or Boston).

If the window lasts a couple more years, I think most people will be fairly surprised. There are quite a few people who believe the window is already closed and unlikely to get re-opened because of how they've already allocated money (I don't know where I am on this, just pointing out that thinking their window can last is already seriously in doubt).

It's the lineup that's the problem. Utley is broken. No one knows what Howard might come back as. Rollins is poop. Victorino is likely a cost casualty after this season (especially if they want to hold onto Hamels, which is a keeping the window open imperative). If you think you can build a WS calibre lineup around Pence and a surprisingly potent Carlos Ruiz, then you're a pretty darn big optimist in my book.

That being said, if they can just squeak into the playoffs with some luck or tweaks, a Halladay/Lee/Hamels threesome could very easily win a WS pretty much on their own if they get hot at the right time, but without a significant boost to the lineup, they can't get them there in a very competitive NL East.

alot has changed since that trade. D'Arnaud is worth 10 times since then, Drabek arguebly less but more of a sure thing now, if thats what they like and Gose well, he's got more value too now since he had a horrible running record the year we got him (running is his game pretty much)......... plus the fact Halladay is older and nearing declining years

trade will have to be different

Arencibia, Hutchison, Sierra, Deck

thats my offer

This is a standard line from all older players hanging on to their dream. Say you want to play for your current team.

Hanging on to his dreams? This is not some washed up veteran we are talking about here.
