Summer 2012 Auction Game - Signups (signups over)
Before I get into this, I just want to mention that this should have no effect on what happens with other trading games, we have, as a board, been able to do trading and drafting games simultaneously without any issues, and this should be no different. I also want to mention that I recognize other regulars who play these games are thinking up a larger-scale idea that hasn't been fully developed, but I just thought we'd run this to get people back into it before doing something bigger.
Another thing I want to add is that this is not a trading game. If you want a trading game, I'm sure either the fantasy draft will take off or another game will, this is a drafting/auction game, not a trading one.
Now that that is over, here is the concept of the game. For those who don't know what an auction game is, it is just what it sounds like. It's an auction, but you bid on players, and the highest bidder wins. There will be 4 tiers of players, with the top players going first.
The different part for this one, is that all "All-NBA 1st and 2nd" teams are out of the game. This includes All-NBA 1st and 2nd Teams and All-NBA Defensive 1st and 2nd teams. So all in all, Chris Paul, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Dwight Howard, Tony Allen, Serge Ibaka, Blake Griffin, Russell Westbrook, Kevin Love, Andrew Bynum, Tony Parker, Tyson Chandler, Rajon Rondo, Kevin Garnett, Luol Deng will all be removed from the pool of players available. It's not a ton of players, but it takes off that top tier on both ends of the floor to make it a tad more interesting. I am considering just removing All-NBA 1st teams, so if I could have a bit of input on that, it would be great.
Basic rules to set up the game include:
-60M cap
-1M = min bid
-Bids can go up by increments of 0.5M
-6 hour period of top bidder before signing (IE you have top bid a 1 PM, you sign him at 7 PM if no one outbids you)
-Clock runs from 8 AM EST to 12 PM EST (clock is off from 12-8 AM, although you can still bid then, just won't count against clock)
-12 players per team
There will either be 8 or 12 GMs, depending on how fast signups go. I think 8 would be ideal, I am planning this to be a relativity small game, but it could go to 12 if the people are there.
For those who don't check the board often, the absolute earliest we will start will be Friday night (tomorrow). It may start later, but that is the earliest.
Any questions, you can email me at keeslinator@gmail.com or post on this thread.

Will there be a max $$ amount you can bid on one player? Also, if you blow your $60M wad early on without filling your roster, what are the consequences? And the counterpart to that question, what are the possible rewards for being a conservative spender?
At any rate, sign me up.

If you don't use all of your 60M, you don't get a reward, so it would be wise to use it all. You will also have cap holds for each player you need (since you need to have exactly 12 players when all is finished), so your cap at the beginning of the game would look like:
1M
1M
1M
1M
1M
1M
1M
1M
1M
1M
1M
1M
Total: 12M
Total Cap: 48M
So the max is 48M I guess, and that would be the max bid.

Once we finish the 4 Tiers of the Auction Draft we will do a playoff. I am going to implement some rules that we had discussed for other games over AIM (such as 500 word limits for writeups, having private rankings, ect), then go from there.
Is everyone fine with removing the All-NBA 1st and 2nd teams? Any feedback on that, or is it fine the way it is?

Re: Summer 2012 Auction Game - Signups
I agree with removing All-NBA 1st teamers and 2nd Teamers (Since the guys who end up with Lebron, Durant, etc. are in a much better position than guys picking later) I don't understand taking the rookies out though, personally.

Yeah we don't have to do that, I just thought I'd take em out cus I took out the other 1st and 2nds teams. Maybe I'll add them back in.
VintaGe36, you want in on the game?

Re: Summer 2012 Auction Game - Signups
I also don't think taking out 1st-team all NBA defensive is a good idea either.
The only guys on the NBA All-Defensive team that might "break" the game are Lebron, CP3, and D12, and they're already out.
I'm interested, it all depends on the execution of the game.

Re: Summer 2012 Auction Game - Signups
Thats not a bad idea, but I think having the defensive teams out helps balance the game. A few months ago we did something sorta like this, where we did a normal draft but without anyone who had been on any all-nba team. It worked out well, but there was a ton of defense, so taking out the top defensive players would equal it out.
The problem with doing something like top three at position is it is all relative to what you think and how you value players. Like I would only agree with like 9-10 players on the above list, and using All-NBA Teams, although maybe not as accurate, is a standardization of doing it and there is no subjectivity.
I'm confident that the game will be run well. I have run 2 full GMaT games successfully (and finished running one since other commish dropped out) and I also ran a draft game. So should I count you in?

I love taking out all 2012 1st and 2nd teamers (NBA, Defensive, and even rookies) makes teams more interesting and flawed which makes writeup actually mean something. just my 2 cents

Perfect, now we have 8 and we can begin.
