Probably brought up but... Shady Endorsements 4 Compensation

Post#1 » by MigrainePatrol » Fri Jun 8, 2012 7:05 pm

Whats there really to stop this form of compensation if done right. Sure his contract is only $2.3 for this year but Nanjing Wu Shoes, just a pair of Nikes without the Swoosh, is giving up $14 million to endorse and wear these. It's a something a team could send out a guy to do and hide about the deal in China and would never show up on the books.

Details would be like Chinese business licensing etc... But easily can be done and hush abroad and nobody would be the wiser. Who's going to China to check out records? Nobody can lol.

The last time a team tried something like this, illegally skirting the cap, it cost them five 1st round picks when they finally got caught. Coach and GM lost jobs, franchise player forced his way out of town, and owner got a franchise that was crippled for over a decade. That's why the powers-that=be on a team are unlikely to attempt something like this.

It became 3 out of the goodness of the heart of Stern, not because there was pushback or some sense that the penalty had been too stiff. The partial rollback of penalties was apparently based on his belief that the Wolves had been slaughtered enough, and had learned their lesson.

But "five #1s" is the precedent set - with the example also having been conveyed that Stern isn't afraid to kill your franchise if you try to sneak around the cap rules. It hasn't happened again.
