About the contractural situation between Lopez and Bynum: would you rather pay Lopez $10 mil (because that's what he'll probably get) or Bynum $16 mil? I would go Bynum all day everyday for the extra $6 mil. While he made that comment in the beginning of the year, I can be quoted as saying that I would rather have Bynum over Lopez, even then. Lopez doesn't play defense and has troubles pulling more than 7 rebounds PER GAME.
The interview where he said he'd take Lopez because of his contract was conducted in December, when Lopez was still on his rookie deal. And he mentions the questions with Bynum's knees. No one knew Bynum would play a full season healthy back in December. I think Penn's logic there is sound.
As for the arrogance, that's debatable. I've never seen him come off as so, but everyone has a unique impression of a person. I tried looking for why both Penn and Pritchard were fired online and couldn't find a definitive answer, but speculation was that ownership didn't like how much power Penn was wielding as an assistant GM.
I like his knowledge of the cap and how to use it; that's definitely a coveted asset. And I think had the Blazers not ran into injuries, they would have done a lot better. Watching the combine and reading up on him, he does have a good feel for how the game is played and what a team needs to be successful. I think he's a legitimately good candidate.
With that said, I think Lindsey is our guy. To me he stands head and shoulders above the rest. Him coming from a championship culture in San Antonio, he knows how a front office is supposed to conduct itself and which players exude optimal professionalism to create a championship mentality in the locker room. Whoever comes in will be expected to hold everyone, coaches and players included, to higher accountability and build a consistent culture of winning. I think Lindsey is the best guy for it. In my order of preference...Lindsey, Weaver, and Penn are all good candidates.
