Rule regarding contact after a clean block?

Post#1 » by jmb987 » Sun Jun 10, 2012 4:26 am

This is in regards to lebron's block on Rondo during game 7...Lebron clearly got a clean block but then after he landed his momentum carried into rondo and caused him to go flying into the chairs/people behind the basket.

What exactly is the rule regarding contact after you get a block? I personally think it's kind of stupid that a player pretty much is allowed to do anything they want after the ball is blocked cleanly but I am willing to hear the flip side of the argument.

Because the basketball play was already over. Those sorts of collisions after clean blocks/deflections where it's purely player momentum shouldn't count against the player making the play. The basketball play is already over once the player makes a clean block and avoids making contact, the contact afterward is just extraneous.

Same way it make sense for shooters to get their hands hit after they've released their shot. Sure you can think that players should be scrutinized for their close outs and contact on follow throughs, but that's just nitpicking. Just my perspective anyway.
LeBron's NBA Cup MVP is more valuable than either of KD's Finals MVPs. This is the word of the Lord

It's a foul for everyone but Lebron.

So as long as I block your shot clean I am allowed to clean you up afterwards?

Please, it is an off the ball foul.

P.S. - I did not watch the game today, so don't know this particular incident. But your reasoning is flawed.

This is a pretty good topic actually, in my opinion at least. I don't say that as any sort of response to anything we've seen tonight, but instead to a general lack of understanding on my part of those specific rules for quite some time now.

Off the top of my head these are two of the most memorable contact-after-the-important-part plays that immediately come to mind:

(start watching about 1:20)

---

It's odd that incidental contact after a shot on the perimeter is called more often as a foul than pretty significant contact after a shot near the rim.

at what level of contact are you allowed to call a loose ball/off the ball foul on contact after a block?

is that even possible or can you literally wind up and close your fist after a block?

Technically I believe it should be an off-the ball foul if the block is clean and the contact happens afterwards. So the ball should be in possession of Rondo in this case (I did not see the game or the play so don't know the severity of the contact)

Yeah that's the thing. Ok, a player makes a clean block...therefore they have the right to knock a player in the stands? It makes no sense at all. They should at least call a non-shooting foul.

Making these calls would add another 30 minutes to a game and open the door for ALL kinds of new flopping metheods. You'd basically not be able to defend layups at this point..

Lebron barely touched him, what do you really want here? If anything, as someone above stated, Rondo flopped to make it look worse than it was. He does it all the time.

if that's a foul then there is a foul on every contested fast break layup. Do you actually want that called? No effect whatsoever on the play, but you want Rondo awarded free throws. But it is odd that you can't touch a jump shooter at all but contact on layups largely goes uncalled

should have been a technical or a flagrant. it has nothing to do with whether the block was clean or not, it's about shoving rondo into the stands after the play. that was a dirty play and dangerous as hell.

That actually should have been a tech. Not a shooting foul at all, but a tech. After the clean block, Rondo had momentum taking him out of bounds. LeBron added to that by pushing him. That is a technical foul, by definition. It would be the same call if LeBron was next to Rondo, and just shoved him out of bounds for no reason.
