ESPN lied - Miller not sure about retirement
Credit goes to Ratchet_Rio for mentioning this in the Finals thread. It's also being mentioned on Twitter.
Thought this was worthy of its own topic....
Mike has told his teammates he will be retiring at the end of the season.
First off, I hope we can send him off on a good note. I've bashed him, not so much for his play but because of injuries. However you can tell by the way he walks that his body just isn't right. He's making a wise decision.
Now in terms of his contract anyone have any idea what happens?
Edit:
Well it appears ESPN is full of crap (What a surprise!). Title edited.

Re: Mike Miller retiring at end of season - ESPN
Is it bad that I wish this was true?

Maybe he is not 100% confirming to not be distracted by outside forces such as questions, or to be a complete distraction to his teammates?
IDK.

Mike Miller refutes report that he is retiring
by Ethan J. Skolnick
Mike Miller’s back has been bothering him for months, much moreso than he has generally indicated publicly.
His discomfort been obvious to anyone who has watched him move on the court, or seen him sprawl out next to the bench.
That’s why Dwyane Wade has called him “the toughest guy on our team.”
That back problem, in fact, contributed to the hernia surgery that caused him to miss the start of the season.
Yet Monday, after the Heat’s practice, he denied an ESPN report that he has told teammates he will retire at the end of the NBA Finals, with three years left on his contract.
“At this point, everybody’s a little banged up,” Miller told the Post. “Everybody’s going through things. I’ll re-evaluate my health after the season. But I don’t have anything set up. I don’t know what’s going to happen.”
Miller had shoulder and thumb surgeries after the 2011 Finals.
Some have also taken his plans to auction his Pompano Beach house on June 30 as a sign that, even if he does play, he will not be back with the Heat next season. Though it is possible the Heat could use the amnesty clause, it could also do so after the 2012-13 season, when there would be greater luxury tax benefits. And Miller and his wife had their house up for sale long before recent developments.
Maybe he is not 100% confirming to not be distracted by outside forces such as questions, or to be a complete distraction to his teammates?
IDK.

If Miller retires, does that automatically nullifies the remaining years of his contract and would that not count against the cap, also if that was the case can Miami amnesty another player to free even more money to possibly get a FA center?

I doubt he retires, too much money left on the table, he won't pass it up.

He still gets his money even if he retires.

Re: Mike Miller retiring at end of season - ESPN
He has an opportunity to ride the bench and get 5 mil a year, until the Heat trade or amnesty him
dude isn't retiring
in all seriousness, Miller's injuries have really hindered him, and it really sucks.
But he is injured every year man, I'd retire if I were him. How can you have fun playing when you are never 100%. Also when you're expected to be the 6th man on this team. Which he still hasn't lived up to. He hits some 3's every now and again and we love them, but we signed him for much more.

Yeah, it sucks that we still see flashes of the old Mike and what he could have been for this team. His body is obviously not right though, and I'd be shocked if he somehow made it through three more years. Can't believe how broken down he's gotten so quickly. Let's send him out with a championship.
What happens to his contract if he retires? Does it come off the cap and we still pay? Or stay on the cap?

I edited the title. Great job ESPN.
OtW may be right. Could be trying to downplay the situation so it doesn't get talked about until after the season is over.

He's a physical wreck, but he always gives 100% on the floor and isn't afraid to throw his body after every ball. I respect that.

I was wondering the same thing. I would think it comes off the cap but he still gets paid regardless like Oden and Roy I guess?

Ray Allen would be a huge improvement over Mike Miller in terms of shooting. I'll miss your floppy silky smooth hair Mike!

Oddly enough, Miller is more afraid to shoot the ball than he is to dive into traffic for rebounds.

Re: ESPN lied - Miller not sure about retirement
I'm not entirely sure but I think your contract stays on the cap (Celtics are still paying Rasheed and he's on their cap as a cap hit). I even remember dead players still be on the cap so I'm pretty sure retirement doesn't get you out of a bad contract. I could be wrong. Please someone correct this if they know for sure.
So it doesn't help us if he retires, his contract is full guaranteed for another 3 years after this one.

Your emotions fuel the narratives that you create. You see what you want to see. You believe what you want to believe. You ascribe meaning when it is not there. You create significance when it is not present.

What we lose in his silky smooth hair we may gain with Ray's silky smooth 3pt shot

From what I understand, his contract counts against the cap, unless both parties agree to terminate the contract.
From what I can tell, most players don't terminate, but instead get bought out, unless the team offers them a front office or coaching position.

I think if a player is badly sick, or retires due to health, the league rewards the team some type of exemption.
