I think if you think about the whole series, that might be true. But if you just look at the first couple books, and take them for what they are without the hype, pomp/circumstance, and rhetoric, they're actually pretty impressive and maybe even groundbreaking... As much as any new book can be ground breaking...

I think the sheer volume of the entire series along with all the hype that surrounded it, sort of muddies the issue about the work.

After reading through a big chunk of that, I gotta go for a smoke break. That's insanely depressing :(

Thanks for the recommendation u-borat, I just finished reading a book called Anthem, by Ayn Rand so I'll add this to my summer reading list. I realized I don't read anymore and have taken it upon myself to start reading again, I feel so ignorant at times. I can probably find this in some online bookstore, I hate going to Barnes & Noble. It was sad to see Borders close down, their e-mailed coupons were the best!

im using book depository, you should check that out. fast/free shipping and the books are really cheap. been thinking about getting a kindle too, the e-book market is crazy big now.

Yes! My sister has a Kindle Fire, man that thing is AMAZING!!! Only $200 and it does soo much. If you can afford an iPad fine, but I'd rather pocket all that money buy a Kindle Fire, some bud to smoke with buddies, and a jam session 8-) I'm gonna check out that book depository, sounds awesome.

thats quite a reasonable response, but the bildungsroman fantasy in a schooling environment is done better and decades earlier by ursula le guin's earthsea series. stripping away the pomp and hype, i see a series with poor writing, excellent characterisation, and especially later a real snowballing in loss of control of plot.

Which is bound to happen with any extended series...

I'm clearly not the target audience for the books and I didn't read what I did with any expectation of transcendent prose... And I don't think anyone is calling the series a quintessential work, or even a true classic, although I think it could stand against some of the other works that are considered classic... But you at least have to give it a little credit for the resurgence in reading and writing for all ages.

To me all fantasy sounds like a remake of Tolkien or CS Lewis or Lewis Carroll...

And that's not necessarily a bad thing.

while I do agree with a few points made (about the wealth distribution and corporate profits), I'm not too worried. Looking at the graphs, most of the overall trends can be explained due to population growth and most of the local trends since the recession have stabilized and are going in the right direction.

The supply in Pittsburgh disappeared almost completely two weeks ago for a few days and it's still catching up. Damn higher ups. I'm going to have to stretch what I have until Friday I think. Do have brownies though.

There's this thing called a Hubby Bar, have you heard of those yet Gek? Those are AMAZING, I ate half the other day before watching The Dictator

I don't know what I'd do if weed was at an all time low in Cali. I remember my dad was telling me back in the early early 90s there was a time when it was really hard to get herb in the valley. Must've been sad times, imagine Californios without their meds :o have you been to a Starbuck's pre-8am, it's like that
