Report: Dion Waiters receives lottery promise from Phoenix

So which team has allegedly “promised” to take Syracuse guard Dion Waiters. I’ve been told by two NBA officials that it is the Phoenix Suns, who pick right after the Bucks.

I would very much prefer Kendall Marshall. :(

Kendall Marshall is not what we need at the moment. He is, no doubt, great passer but we, more than anything, need a scorer right now so Waiters or Rivers are obvious choice and I am happy with that.

I bet those two NBA officials both work for the Raptors, who really gave him the promise.

David from Portland
This years draft is going to be pretty important to the Blazers, which 2 players do you think they should draft with their two picks assuming they fall to them? Beal, Drummond, Meyers, Lillard, Barnes, Sullinger, Zeller, or any other players you think would be a good pick.

Steve Kyler
My latest Mock has them taking Drummond and Waiters… Drummond is too talented to pass and Waiters has a promise from someone, hearing its not Phoenix or Toronto, so either there is a trade in play for him or its the Blazers

I'm not believing a damn thing from the team that picks right in front of us. Just some pre-draft mindgames.

Isn't Waiters suppose to go before us?

We have no reason to believe it's us....Blanks and Babby are running a VERY tight ship there, so if it is out it's most likely a smoke screen

I'd hope so, but Lopez, Clark, and Morris were all slotted to go to the Suns in the vast majority of mocks leading up to their respective drafts. The only recent surprise was Dragic, which was the previous FO and they had him in for a secret workout which they did not publicize on the web like all the other workouts that year.

I agree with the tight ship comment and all - but I haven't read anything that leads me to believe anything "leaked" per se. If anything and assuming it was PHX who made the promise, I like that we picked our target and locked him up, thus sheltering him from other workouts with other teams and securing his value and possibility at #13.

I heard a dark horse with Waiters may be Portland. We either promised Waiters or Rivers (if anyone) and neither may be there when we pick.
Regardless, anyone who is disguested by the prospect of getting either, it's a crapshoot at teh 13th spot anyway. So if we are the ones who made a promise, I doubt enough research wasn't done to validate doing so.

I have a hard time understanding how any of the teams that didn't make Waiters a promise would feel comfortable taking him without the combine, interviews or private workouts.

I mean, say it was PHX with the promise to Waiters - they had enough confidence to promise in order to keep other teams from getting a full evaluation done. It plays directly to PHX's benefit. Why, if you're another GM, would you risk a pick on a guy who won't even come in for an interview or workout?
