Re: Trade Rumors Thread
Other than by far the best trade piece leaving here for nothing but two draft picks? Greinke is going to test free agency, some team is going to blow the Brewers offer out of the water and he'll sign somewhere else. There is no reason not to trade Greinke.

Re: Trade Rumors Thread
Again, if the Brewers really think they can sign Greinke then there's no good reason they shouldn't trade him and get a prospect or two in return first. If they can pay him enough and he likes Milwaukee, then they can sign him from another team almost as easily as they can extend him. My understanding is that they wouldn't have to give up premium draft picks to bring him back after trading him, and I'm sure he wouldn't be upset at being able to play for a contender for half a season while the Brewers regroup.
Wut we've got here is... faaailure... to communakate.

I think I agree with this, in theory. I just don't know if I trust Doug enough to trade for guys that would be better than what we'd be able to draft with the comp picks. It's kind of a crap shoot either way.

Re: Trade Rumors Thread
If he hits the open market I think it's a lock that another team will offer him more. The hope would have to be he loves playing in Miller Park.
I think Doug's smart enough that if we're out of it in July he'll move him if Greinke hasn't agreed to an extension.

First off, for a guy that loves acquiring draft picks so much, that sure is an interesting question.
Second, if Melvin thinks that keeping Greinke around during the season will lead to contract talks during the year that wouldn't happen otherwise, then he's staying. The Brewers want Greinke (and vice versa), and so they will go full bore at it. And I have no problem with that. I feel the Brewers have a better shot at signing Greinke than they did with CC or Prince, and the Brewers will do everything in their power to do it.
So they'll trade Marcum, they'll trade K-Rod. Maybe a guy like Gomez is traded, too. And would it surprise me if Greinke is traded? No. But I don't think it's going to happen, and I'm completely fine with that.
The best case scenario is dealing him, then throwing the kitchen sink at him in the offseason.

Agree with both of these statements. I don't know if we can maintain our current payroll levels long term, but I wouldn't put it past Mark A. to do whatever he can to keep Greinke. Prince there was no chance, same with CC. Greinke won't enter that contract realm, so there's a chance.

Re: Trade Rumors Thread
I don't mind keeping Greinke. Obviously, the best solution would be to trade Greinke and then attempt to bring him back in free agency (best of both worlds), but I think it would make it harder to bring him back. I also expect Mark to stretch the payroll to make Greinke a competitive offer.
Keeping that it in mind, and recognizing the fact that we'll still get comp picks for Greinke, I'm fine holding onto him. I think the chances that anyone we're going to trade for will be as good, or even relatively close to being as good, as Greinke in the long run is really slim. So I don't see the problem with keeping him and working hard to re-sign him.
As for Marcum, K-Rod, and the other pending FAs - my drop dead date was and is still the AS Break. If we're still scuffling at that point, I think we have to move them.

Not really a trade, but with Manny and Vlad both available, you would want either?

That would be remarkable...and it has happened before and not out of the realm of possibility. I do like that.
I'd take JJ Hardy back for Marcum.
I wish you could trade draft picks in baskeball. You could make a deal with the Astros who took two Shortstops I believe.
If that does not work...then Bill Hall is availible yet. He is only what 32 or 33?
But seriously I would trade Zack Grienke to the Marlins for Hanley Ramirez and be done with it. Helps both teams. That's fair.

Yes and call Bill Hall and Derek Lee while you are at it.
Especially Lee.

I think so too. I hope we can get something done with him.
What could we even get for K-Rod? I can't imagine a team giving up much for him.

Ryan Howard - There was that report that the Brewers would have made a play for Howard if he didn't get hurt last year. I don't know if this is still possible, but I would look into it. He is due back in a month and if we can hold on until then, he might be worth the risk. The report stated that the Phillies would eat 30% of his remaining 5yr/$125 mil contract.
Adam Dunn - Seems to be having a rebound season - According to B/R - Getting a team to take the $44 million left on Dunn's contract would be a tough sell. But if the White Sox agree to eat some of that salary, maybe that could get a deal done and get better prospects in return.
Would love to have Ryan Howard....or Dunn. But especially Howard. Man that would be great.

I disagree. The best trade Melvin made is when he jumped the gun and got CC. The timing of a trade is just as important as making one.El Duderino wrote:trwi7 wrote:I don't think it's panic trades, I consider it more realistic trades.
Let's look at this realistically.
Who is saying that the Brewers shouldn't be sellers at all this year?
All some are saying is that there is little to no harm in waiting until next month. There will be plenty of teams looking for help come July if the Brewers seem pretty clearly out of competing for a playoff berth.
Why wait? Why are you waiting for this and that date. Pull the trigger now if you can.

Re: Trade Rumors Thread
A guy I've had my eyes on for years is Alejandro De Aza. I'd love to acquire him and make him our leadoff hitter for 8 years.
I'm a huge Aoki fan, but he signed a 2 year deal and is 30 years old. I like Gomez more than most but this is the first season of his career that is OBP is above .300 (.310) I don't see either of them as the leadoff man of the future.
Same goes for Hart and Weeks. Who knows what's going on with Weeks and if he will ever get back right but you certainly cannot count on him to leadoff. Hart sucks as a leadoff man. Low OBP, swings at bad pitches, is very streaky. Plus he has one of the better power bats on the team and it's wasted at the top of the lineup. That same thing could be said in theory about Weeks.
I realize this is not our biggest problem, but he's a legit lead-off man and that's a need.

You do know that Aza is 28 right?

Re: Trade Rumors Thread
He's 28 but is just about to enter arby, he's under team control until 2016.
No clue honestly, that is why I brought him up. I am not knowledgeable with other teams minor leagues and didn't know if maybe they have a young outfielder(s) they like? But they have some big money tied up to the likes of Alex Rios & Adam Dunn.
De Aza is only making half a million this year and is certainly due for a raise.

Re: Trade Rumors Thread
The White Sox have the worst minor league system in baseball, and they, once again, have no interest in trading De Aza.
