8. Ryan Dempster, RHP, Cubs - Well, if he didn’t seal his fate with a tremendous outing against the Red Sox Friday (seven shutout innings, extending his scoreless streak to 22), he never will. There were scouts all over Wrigley to watch him. The Dodgers could pull the trigger soon. The Blue Jays also were watching. After Friday’s game, Dempster and his friends got together on the field and were having cocktails, as if toasting the end of his Cubs days. We’ll see.

Interesting. I wonder what we would have to give up?

A. Lot.
Wow, this would be a serious win-now move. The guy's 35. Just on the numbers, I think his ERA drop from 4.80 last year to 2.11 this year has to be primarily attributed to an outlier BABIP of .235 this season, far below his usual number. His unusually low HR/fly ball rate of 7.5% this year is helping him too, and you therefore see his xFIP at 3.68, compared to a FIP of 3.23. But the FIP and especially the xFIP are pretty much in line with previous seasons. But he's also walking 1.2 less guys per 9 innings this year than last.
I trust AA not to overpay. I don't see how we can get him if we're going up against the Dodgers et al.

I wouldn't be willing to sacrifice any long term assets for Dempster

...and from the sounds of it the Cubs want to send a lot of money with him, so that they can get back the best prospects possible.
Doesn't sound like a fit at all.

would for sure fill a major hole but would not want to pay to much in return, being that age he is diffinately to far over the hill to give us any major contribution over the next few years, it would only be a fix for this year, and is really worth while fixin for just this year????

If we're dealing with the Cubs, I'd prefer Garza.

Dempster has just been placed on the 15 day DL with shoulder "tightness" most likely to preserve his trade value IMO

#1. AA can't control what agents and other GMs may be leaking in their own best interests.
#2. This isn't really a rumour. It's some (non-Toronto, oddly enough) journalist's observation that we are scouting Dempster.
#3. As a rival GM recently said, AA asks about EVERYBODY, as part of the process of assessing value throughout the league. So every rumour IS valid, as long as the target isn't too expensive. As Dempster surely would be.

This.
It's always important to look at the rate-stats.
