this is really bizarre. i am shocked. dunlap was the one guy we all dismissed. he has the least credentials of anyone we interviewed and nobody ever discussed him as a real candidate. what are we doing?

After the Sam Vincent debacle, I never thought they'd go this route...and I guess they didn't...they picked a guy with LESS experience than Vincent.

Adrian Wojnarowski ‏@WojYahooNBA

People I respect in NBA always believed Dunlap had chops to be a head coach. Just didn't think it would be a leap from Steve Lavin's bench.

Also, Michael Jordan doesn't want to pay for a basketball coach. And clearly that's part of hiring Mike Dunlap, a Big East assistant coach.

Dunlap won Division II national titles at Metro State before Nuggets. Tough, no-nonsense guy. Clearly, MJ wants a teacher with young team.

Eh, I'm really not going to hate on it too much. When we had a ton of candidates, I think him and Tibbetts were third/fourth on my list.

Sounds like a Cho move.

Dunlap, 53, joined the St. John's basketball family after serving as the associate head coach on Pac-10 staffs during the last two seasons. Arizona went 21-14 in 2008-09, advancing to the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16 before ending the season with a loss to top-seeded Louisville in the NCAA Midwest Regional Semifinal game. Dunlap joined Oregon's staff in 2009-10, with the Ducks posting a 16-16 record.

Prior to his appointments at Arizona and Oregon, Dunlap spent two seasons in the NBA, working for the Denver Nuggets under head coach George Karl. The Nuggets compiled a 95-69 (.579) record during his tenure and made two playoff appearances, including a 50-win season for the 2007-08 Denver squad, a first for the organization in 23 seasons.

Prior to his tenure at Metro State, Dunlap served three seasons as the head coach of the Adelaide 36ers, a professional basketball team in Australia. The 36ers posted a 59-33 (.641) record during his tenure and advanced to the National Basketball League Final Four in 1995 and 1996 after appearing in the Grand Final in 1994.

I like the hire and I'm not bullsh*tting. Could have done worse (like Nate). He's a **** winner and that's what we need.

If Jordan had a track record of savvy moves, Mike Dunlap would be hailed as outside the box. But since he doesn't, Dunlap's a cheap unknown.

Wonder which of the Bobcats' coaching candidates had the smaller salary demands.

no matter our reasoning, the basketball world is unanimous in their thinking that MJ decided to go with the cheapest option.

“He’s absolutely one of the best coaches that I’ve ever been around,” she said. McDermott added: “I know as an athletic director at those top Division I schools that sometimes it may be tough to take a chance on a guy without the big name. But he’s worth the risk. If they hired him, the rest would be history.”

Karl was equally impressed, saying: “He’s the most intelligent person that has a love for the game of basketball that I’ve ever been around. His ability to analyze and articulate and figure out the problems of day-to-day basketball was incredible for me.”

This may also be a backdoor thing. Dunlap was an assistant of George Karl on the Nuggz a few years ago who Im sure put in a great word to MJ with there UNC ties & Larry Brown ties.
