Filling in for Lavin this year, Dunlap really did a good job. The record might not be the most impressive, but he really did good with the young St John's team. He got them to buy into what he was preaching and he has won at various levels. He was praised by Big East coaches for stepping up so big this year, some even flirted with Big East COTY talks. [Crazy, I know.]

Considering what your roster and talent will be next year, I actually think it's a good hire. He was cheap and will be as effective as any other coach you could've hired.

St. John's fan here. Dunlap is the perfect coach for your team. He is a great teacher and pushes guys. Great at the x's and o's. He was basically the head coach for our team this year with Lavin being out with prostate cancer.

He is known for the way he coaches up guys, doesnt take bs and doesnt get pushed by the players. This year with a team of 8 players, and 7 new guys he had to basically coach up guys and did a great job. They all improved from beginning to end of the season. Also Nurideen Lindsey transferred out because Dunlap wouldnt compromise and give him what he wanted and thats with 8 players.

This is some bull....2 years from now we will be looking for a coach again....I am not happy...even if the guy was cheap he could have at least been a finalist...it's like they are playing a joke on themselves

UNC and Duke fans alike make me sick with this babble.

And yes, Im a Duke fan. Hire the best players, and coaches regardless of where they went to school.

Happy to see someone with a reputation for Xs and Os. It will be a nice change of pace from the Silas "system" I'm sure

you might be on to something here, as relevant or irrelevant as that would be now. i must confess i never considered him a serious candidate for the same reasons as many others on this board. because of that i don't know anything about him, but candid endorsements from a coach of george karl's stature would be just as useful as anything else.

i just didn't think he had the resume to make the jump to the NBA. but he's not exactly a spring chicken at 53, so maybe he'll see this as his big chance to build a legacy, and maybe ambition will carry the day like it would have with snyder or shaw.

another thing that is interesting is the mention of his openness to a "collaborative approach" as worded in the bonnell piece. could be they wanted the next coach to play ball with the front office's personnel plan (whatever TF that is at this juncture). that would probably be a 2nd interview gauntlet that would weed out coaches who want more authority.

From the bits and pieces I've read he seems to be a good coach.

Like Fat's I'm now going to get behind him.
Actually no, I'm going to go the Stun route. Mike Dunlap is going to become the new Red Auerbach.

He coached the 36'ers. That should get him instant Aussie cred.

 Except the 36'ers are in Adelaide the Mass Murderer capital of Australia. The least popular capital city in Oz.

So we should definitely be expecting to see Tyrus to be traded in the first few weeks.

What did you want from a head coach?

Dunlap gives you a teacher for your young roster and will get the best out of your roster. He's a great hire for a young team.

Its both. The city of Churches and the city of mass murderers. Seems fitting.

I admit it, it was me.

I was in a silly mood and thought that anyone who can lead the Adelaide 36er's into the finals with this guy as your starting point guard deserves some respect.

Reading up on him, he's not as bad as some of you guys are making him out to be.
He was pretty much head coach of that college team this year, probably shoulda/coulda been head coach at Arizona . He is a defensive coach who also has a good tactical mind.

I too would much rather him than Ewing.

So, I'm okay with this. I worry that he'd struggle to teach guys at this level, but if George Karl vouches for him, I'll give him that benefit and keep my fingers crossed. We can't get worse, so...

i kinda glazed over that part of the bonnell piece. what exactly would this mean? as simple as a coach who agrees in developing youth at all costs and won't push the front office to rush things?

i definitely hope the collaboration is with personnel and playing time, and not with letting stephen silas randomly coach 5 games a season or something crazy like that.

Havent followed the Bobcats much, but if he doesnt give effort I dont think he gets playing time.
