I am a St Johns follower and I think for a young team, he's not a bad fit. He took over this year for Lavin due to Lavin recovering from cancer and while his win-loss record wasn't great, you have to understand 2 things in regards to St Johns of 2011
1) The team was full of freshman(God's Gift was a JUCO) was and the lone junior in Stith left the team early.
2) Due to suspensions/transfers from Naureen Lindsay, Stith and others, it was basically a 6 man rotation for the entire year so players played most if not all of the game
The fact that they didn't finish last speaks volumes to how Harkless, Garrett, Harrison and Co. played well for their age and how good of a job Dunlap did.
Dunlap came from Zona as a key assistant and a great basketball mind. He's very patient, very good motivator who was a large part of the St Johns NCAA tourney bid 2 years back, and was a key x's and o's guy for Lavin who was put in a very unfamiliar scenario last season.
Hopefully this isn't Reggie Theus 2.0 and Dunlap is given some room to breathe. I didn't expect this hire at all and I wonder if Dunlap can handle this but I am happy he's getting this chance. He's a good fit for a very young team.
As much as I gave you guys flack for the Larry Brown hire(Which I was right on), this is a nice hire. Unexpected hire but still I like this. Will be rooting for Dunlap to do well, he was a class act for St Johns and a good reason we are heading in the right direction as a basketball program.
