I look at fouls the way I called them as a ref. if it didn't hinder the play, and weren't excessive, I didn't call them. I remember one game I was reffing, where the star player from one team was swiping down to try and knock the ball away from the opposing pg, but it was going on at half court. It was borderline foul, but the long swiping made it look worse than it may have been. I didn't make a call. On one of the swipes, which looked like hard contact, had knocked the ball off the pg and out of bounds. I didn't call the foul, I just said possession stayed the same.
It happened right in front of the coach of the star player, and he was yelling at me, because it clearly went off the other player. I went up to him, and said aside, did you want me to call the foul on your star player, or just keep the possession the same. He shut up quickly. I didn't give star treatment, I just felt like the foul didn't hinder the play, because it was so far from the basket. Now if it was on a drive to the basket, I would have called it.
But a flopping thing is totally different. The foul, or non foul happens so quickly, and with a rule like this, the refs will most likely over think the call or non call. We'll have to see, but I don't want to see more review, or now the ref making the judgement call only to find out the opposite a day or two later. It isn't like they can change the call.
I just really wish that the calls were consistent on both ends, which we find happens in too many games now a days. They let physical contact to go on one end, and then call ticky tacky stuff on the other end. That is what they should be trying to fix. And how about some fines for refs that clearly blow a call. Maybe that will stop some of the favoritism that has plagued the league for years. Wait, what am I saying, have Stern's goons held acountable for their actions?
