Building for the future

Post#1 » by [RCG] » Thu Jun 21, 2012 3:19 pm

This scenario takes a longer-term, more flexible approach to the Wolves winning.

Trade: http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=7q36awa
Minnesota clears future cap-space, Dallas sheds Odom/gets Barea back, Toronto sees if Odom has rededicated himself, otherwise they keep Ridnour as a cheaper starter, solid back-up if they choose Lillard or Marshall in the draft or pursue Nash.
Draft @ #18: Terrence Ross

Rubio/Calderon/Lee
Ross/Ellington/Lee
Williams/
Love/
Pekovic/

*We'd be sitting at $41 million in salary w/ 6 players to sign.http://www.hoopsworld.com/2012-nba-free-agents
Could try to offer Batum 4yrs/$48 mil or
Sign: Matt Barnes @ 1yr/4 mil - Humphries/Bass @ 1 yr-$6 mil or Hill @ 1yr/$3 mil - Fesenko/Stiemsma/Pryzbilla @ 1yr/1.5 mil. All could be 2 yr player options. Idea is to save cap-space.

Going into the following year we have a core of:

Rubio/Lee
Ross/Lee
Williams/
Love/
Pekovic/
*Decline Ellington QO - Accept Pek's QO
*We'd have $31.1 mil in salary for roughly $27 mil in cap-space

$0.02
Keep Ridnour and trade Barea/Johnson for Calderon.
Then trade Ridnour for value (TPE + 1st round pick maybe?)

I'd be happy if we could get a wing prospect at 18(Ross / Quincy Miller / Harkless), sign another wing with our caproom, and then move one of Barea/Ridnour for a future pick or a backup big. Allow Derrick to try to play more of a combo forward(if he can't take the SF spot full-time), and allow guys like Lee / #18 / Williams to develop along with Rubio/Pek/Love.

Makes a lot of sense for us.

Call me crazy, especially as the #1 resident Wes Johnson hater, but I feel like we should see what he can do after a proper summer and training camp. I don't think his trade value can get much worse at this point, so we don't really have anything to lose.

Calderon would make 11.6M next year after his trade kicker. Barea and Wes will make about a combined $8.8M.

^ Agree on waiting it out on Wes. His value can really only go up from here on out. If he can show that he can be a + defender and shoot near 40% from three then he could have a solid value to people around the league.

We know he has the talent to at least be a solid starter (like he was supposed to be from day 1). I really don't think he takes the game seriously. I hope he has a strong off-season and is really fed up with the way he looked and really turns it around. I hope he has a shooting coach with him all off-season.

We all would like it if he could take it in more often but if he can at least sit in the corner and hit most of his 3s and continue to play solid defense, he'll be alright.

If he did that, he would have solid value for the Wolves!

I'd honestly rather sell the 18 for cash rather than waste it on Ross. We'd be much better off combining the 18 with Webster's pseudo-expiring for Wes Matthews (or something similar).

Because Ross wouldn't ever play for three reasons. 1. He's a rookie, and Adelman doesn't play rookies. 2. He can't dribble at all, and Adelman wants wings who can dribble. 3. He's a Wes Johnson clone, and we all ready have the original (who shouldn't play ever either).

Re Ross: Probably doesn't matter. Everyone seems to have him in the lottery right now and he got invited to attend the draft, which provides some further indication that he probably wasn't going to be around at 18.

Ha probably not. I think they'd be good fits though. And Roy is rumored to be a target.
