(EE) Keep, Trade or let walk
Edwin Encarnacion, do u keep him and sign an extention?..... trade him for a kings ransom?.... or let him walk for picks?
i for one think he is the real deal. sign him to a 3-4 year extention and JAYS r set at DH for a while.

He could probably get a 4-5 year deal on the open market, so it's going to cost Rogers to keep him..

I definitely think he is the real deal. This is just the realization of the potential everyone around the league always knew he had. It kind of feels like another Bautista type turn around to me, I'd sign him to a 4 year deal, maybe around 8-9 million per? I am not sure if my pricing is close, but I think, given it's only been one year, that seems appropriate given Bautista got 13.

Re: (EE) Keep, Trade or let walk
Yes I'd like him to stick around, but to me 8-9 per sounds high. Remember this is a guy that no one really wanted just 1 1/2 years ago due to his middling bat and glaring 3B defense. He even got demoted to AAA not too long ago. At the start of this season, even, people wanted him gone.
If you look at his stats, the big difference this year is that he's converted a lot of doubles into HRs. Hence the higher slugging, and higher OPS (+.150 or so). In my mind, that difference based on not even half a season isn't worth a massive raise from his current $3.5M per.

“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

The trade return would be extraordinary. The additional wild-card berth coupled with a few tight division races will result in more than a few teams looking to buy EE. I would trade him.

He's been worth $10M thus far in 2012. 8-9 is not high, it's the going rate. Doesn't matter what he was doing 1.5 years ago.
I think they should trade him though. Not much value to be had with signing a free agent at his peak. He hasn't made much in his career so I wouldn't blame him for going for a big pay day. Wouldn't hurt to keep him around though since we don't have a DH anyway. 4/35 would be fine by me.

Still undecided. I am tempted by the idea of picking up some top notch prospects, but on the other hand we would probably be hard pressed to find a replacement for him, leaving a significant hole at both 1B and DH, unless AA does a whole bunch of wheeling and dealing.

For prospects, right?

Yeah, i think he could get 5/60-65M on the market.

If that's true, and I'm not convinced it is, then you have to trade him. I'm wary of handing out large contracts to guys who decide to put in the extra effort just in their contract year. We want to avoid cases like Jose Reyes and Carl Crawford, just to name a couple off the top of my head.
BTW, I'm not saying EE will regress next year. I'm saying that the odds do not justify handing out a mammoth contract based on half a season. I'd be shocked if he got $10 per.

With the new comp rules, he's truly a rental and that will reduce what we can get for him. I'd be inclined to keep him, make the qualifying offer, and then let the chips fall, either resigning him or getting a comp pick if he walks.
I'll keep on pointing this out: The new TV mega deals around the league are going to drive up MLB talent costs. And spending on draft picks and Latin prospects is now capped. Teams with more money to spend, but no way to spend it on futures with picks and prospect signings, are going to have spend at the major league level. EE is much better value than guys getting $200 million deals. Whether you like it or not, he's going to get a package that starts at $10-12 million. Overpriced? that's a perceptual thing, and if this organization spent $100 million a year at the major league level, he would not be overpriced. He's only overpriced if you accept that we have a chicken shat owner that won't ever spend.

Bautista hit 54 HR and then signed a 12M/5 extension, EE will likely be under 10M, my personal guess is 8 or under (over 4-6 years)

I don't think you can use what happened two years ago when we got Jose in what in hindsight is a sweetheart deal as an example of EE's current market value. Salary inflation has continued, and is if anything is accelerating with new TV deals. A 35 HR/100RBI guy is going to do better than <$8 million.

Jose was worth 12M/annually when he signed that contract. He had a bad history and was unproven. Edwin is in a similar boat, should make well less than Bautista. Edwin also plays DH which lowers his WAR and usefulness for the team so we should get a discount.

If they don't re-sign him, we'll know how serious Rogers is about contending.

i don't doubt the high interest in Edwin's services, but i do doubt we'd get extraordinary return with his expiring contract.

Don't discount the desperation clubs feel as the window of opportunity for postseason begins to close. I'm predicting a bull market.

Re: (EE) Keep, Trade or let walk
Unless we're smack-dab in the center of the race after another fortnight, trade. Not quite ready to call Encarnacion the next Bautista, and we'd likely get quite a good return given that he's a 29 year old soon-to-be FA who is largely restricted to 1B/DH, and has a career OPS+ of 108.

**** your asterisk.
