Pat Riley: The Original BB Gangster

A great read about Pat, we're lucky to have him.
Most of us doubted some decions he made with Spo, Miller and Even Battier, they proved him right in such an epic timing and manner.

Ever realize the Heat have 2 Big 3s? 3 on the court, and the 3 that make it all happen.

I mean.. Look at this franchise pre-Riley and after Riley for here in 95. Its ridiculous! Turned an expansion team into a contender in 2 years.. Zo, Timmy, Mash, PJ, Thunder Dan etc. I mean look at the players he's given us. Lebron, Wade, Shaq, Zo, Timmy, Bosh smh! I mean these are legendary players!

Look at all the other expansion teams from 88 on.. We have left them in the dust and I feel in the next 4-5 years with another title or too will be up their with the elite franchises in the NBA. That's damn impressive considering the lakers, celtics, etc have 30 plus years on us.

Man.. Feels like yesterday I saw Billy Owens going coast to coast and Eric Reid after the play says "the best player to ever wear a Heat jersey"... Lol. How far we've come.

From wiretap (via Miami Herald):

Pat Riley wants his players to quickly forget about winning the NBA championship.

“We’ve got a championship in our back pocket,” Riley said. “Just one. One of the things you don’t want to do after it is in your back pocket, you don’t want to start reminding everyone how you did it. That is the start of the team on the demise. I remember when we won in 1987, best year we ever had with the Lakers, Mychal Thompson was our Shane Battier. We won the championship, had a great night, celebrated, a really great night, and he was in the weight room at 7 a.m. the next morning. I remember that 25 years later. You don’t want to get too drunk with your success. You don't want to waste a lot of time telling everyone how you mastered it. Simply, euphorically, quietly, enjoy it. That is hard for the contemporary generation today to understand."

Riley wants his team to get back to doing the things that led them to winning the title.

“I hope we deal with it how Mychal Thompson did,” Riley said. “LeBron met with [Hakeem] Olajuwon last offseason to improve his game. Is he going to do something like that again this year? Is Wade going to do something about his health now that he’s 30? Maybe think of a different night-to-night approach? Is Chris, God bless him, he’s our center? Our best lineup, the one we go to war with, is with him at center. Is he going to be OK with that now that he has won? Now our guys have to get better in the head, and they need to know how to handle and defend the championship, and win more. I'm going to wait about a week, and then I'm going to send them letters and reminders.”

I think that deserves its own thread. Lot of good insinuations there.

Is Riley focusing on getting a non-center (with Bosh at center)? If so, is the plan to get a pf? Or get a sf and play LeBron more at pf? Is he thinking Ray Allen, so that they can throw out a Wade/Allen/LeBron/Haslem/Bosh lineup when it's business time?

Is he implying that Wade has not really been as serious about his health as he should be? If so, does that mean Wade might have the capacity for a strong resurgence and additional prime years if he were to begin being more serious about it?

And I love the needle at LeBron to get better. Yes LeBron is the best in the game, but what's really remarkable is that he could be quite a bit better than he is and that it's well within his control to make some substantial improvements if he really chooses to.

There is no GM in the history of the game who has accomplished what Riley has the past several off-seasons.

He has every summer got his man. And got him DISCOUNTED. Lebron, Bosh, Battier, Miller, and now Ray Ray....DISCOUNTED. Who does that?!

Other GMs talk about doing stuff like this. Riley goes out and does it.

And he does it without being in a major market like the Knicks or Lakers, who can outspend anyone. Riley makes Jerry West look like a little bitch.

Jerry West has always been overrated, Ainge would be out of a job if it wasn't for his old buddy that gave him KG, Mitch Kupchak was given Pau Gasol...Riley is greater than all of them, Period!
