Hey, flying up to Washington for a day of whitewater kayaking next Saturday. Now, I've never done any kayaking to speak of more than paddling around a flat lagoon so I'm quite likely to break bones and end up in the hospital but assuming I don't,

Where's the best trail for a couple of days hiking within a few hours of Washington? Assuming the Appalachian somewhere but where is the best place to start off and end, etc. THANKS.

Just bought a Living Social deal to this place. Haven't been yet, though.

Who cares about your skin-color, didn't u post some anti-gentrification stuff? That was my point anyway.

Everything went downhill after the Wizards name change and the new arena opened up.
I dont call it gentrification anymore I call it pussification.
When I was growing up my parents tried to keep me sheltered by sending me to private Catholic schools so trust me I know a thing or two about pussification.

I think it's pretty astute to associate the gentrification of D.C. with the Wizards name change, the shoe definitely fits, IMO, and I find his schtick quite amusing.

The pussification of DC? Reminds me of 14th Street and Thomas Circle, back in the day.

I believe that area has been de-pussified, Tiny.

I would say the billy goat trail - also known as the great falls trail on the Maryland side - is the best local area hike. Old Rag is a summit on the Appalachian range that's about 2 hrs SW of the city. There are a few others like sugarloaf mountain and the Va side of the great falls trail, but I think the Billy Goat and Old Rag will be your best bet. The Billy goat will take between 1 and 2.5 hrs depending on which loop you choose and Old Rag is a 2.5-3.5 hr hike depending on how fast you go.

also, CCJ with the zinger!

Yeah but now the gentrifiers are the ones getting drilled from the rear.
They are getting drilled from the rear by their landlords every single month when the rent is due.

The more things change the more they stay the same.

Wedding anniversary? If you've been married a few years, take your wife out to a nice restaurant. If you've been married 30 years, go out alone and get drunk. Whatever EG does, you can read about it in the morning.

I've done the Billygoat probably 20 times -- grew up within walking distance of it (back before Brickyard Rd. was paved, lol). Used to climb the cliffs and go down into the caves there too. Haven't been up Old Rag . . . will check it out, thanks. Was thinking of getting us out of the city for a 2-3 days up in the mountains where, hopefully, it's cooler.

Whoa, Tiny. More of the same?

You must be talking about the other end of the city, just across the river, Tiny. Near the Iwo Jima Memorial. I heard about that sort of thing going on. Not that it's a bad thing. Back in the day marines went there and beat up guys. Some probably were there for other reasons. I guess those gentleman were getting gentrified, if that's what you call it. :)

I don't think that area was ever pussified back in the day.

yes wedding anniversary. This will be the 2nd one in 9 years that has fallen on draft day. The first time...i totally dissed my wife and watched it(the year we picked Nick Young) and never heard the end of it.

This year....i think i have to spend time with her till she falls asleep...and then go downstairs and watch it on DVR

RG III has apparently been the target of an extortion plot.

Whatever the truth is, I don't care as long as the guy plays well and no distractions that take away from his play occur.

Well I will take your word for it because I was a little kid and that was not exactly my scene back then. Like I said, my parents tried to shelter me as much as they could.
I could not even go to Flippers without adult supervision. :(

Do you remember Flippers?

I suspect it was a pic/vid of RG smoking-up with some team-mates.

Kev's guy Malcolm Gladwell in a debate on NPR last night about
whether college football should continue (due to head injuries).
Gladwell was on the no it shouldn't side if I heard correctly (didn't
listen to the whole thing).

Good hikes near DC - Maryland Heights just across the Potomac from
Harpers Ferry. It's a short steep hike. If you want to do a longer hike
ie multi-day, I would look at the AT. Also good hiking a little further
west on the VA-WV border west of Woodstock VA at/near Wolf Gap.
Or in the GW National Forest in/around Massanutten Mtn between
Luray and Front Royal.
