Humble Yourself - The Ben Gordon Thread

Post#1 » by bobcats3wallace » Wed Jun 27, 2012 12:08 am

Adrian Wojnarowski ‏@WojYahooNBA
Detroit has traded Ben Gordon and a protected future first-round pick to Charlotte for Corey Maggette, league sources tell Y! Sports.

Figured I would go ahead and start this. Mods please edit/remove if you feel necessary.

Here's hoping "Future first round pick" means Top 5 protected next year.

We just traded for an undersized combo guard with a sh*tty contract.

I understand getting the pick is an asset, however why do this trade now? Why basically show our cards before the draft? It's a future pick, not a current pick. Now were basically saying Barnes is our guy, or at least it appears that way. Why not wait until Friday to do this kind of move? Makes me think we may see more to come.

Gordon is owed 12.4 million this upcoming year and has a player option for 13.2 million the following year. Not a TERRIBLE deal (in terms of years), but certainly more than he is worth. Also he comes in at SG which we already have Hendo at. If the first was for this draft it all would make much more sense, but that doesn't appear to be true.

Gordon has two years left on his deal. Hopefully he can get back to being the Chicago BG...

Gordon averaged 12.5 ppg, 2.4 apg, 2.3 rpg and shot 42% from 3 last season in 27 mpg.

This was a guy I wanted us to sign back when he left the bulls, but I really question how he fits the Bobcats right now. With a team that has Kemba and Hendo, how does Gordon figure to fit in here? Now we have a MASSIVE hole at SF. All that is left their is DBrown and he is a free agent...unless they view Hendo as a SF?

Dunlap did get his 3 point shooting he wanted though.

i think the bobcats basically traded one season of cap space (a season when they probably won't be making a title run) for a protected 1st round pick. using something of value that they have (cap space) to get things they don't have (a bucketload of picks to use to move around at the top of the draft in future seasons).

One thing to consider, every team has to meet a minimum team payroll and the Bobcats were very well under it, though I don't know the exact calculations. Last year it was around $50 million and as it stood before the trade the Bobcats had 11 players under contract at a projected payroll of $43 million, assuming Diop and Caroll pick up their options, and they would be crazy not to. In order to meet the minimum payroll count they would have needed to overpay and commit to a salary long term. Ben Gordon's contract sucks but at least he provides one thing, and that's great 3 point shooting. And he'll probably be coming off the bench. At the same time you get rid of Maggette and don't commit to a player you didn't want to just to meet that minimum payroll.

Gordon's contract is acceptable, I agree. It's more than he is worth, but he has next year (which we had Maggette anyway) and then a player option the following year. I wish we could had gotten the Pistons pick THIS year.

Does this mean Hendo could be on the move? Anybody else feel there is another move coming?

good use of an expiring to get a pick. I guess Gordon will play the 6th man role?

We got some 3pt shooting at least.

Either that or we are trying to get a FA small forward (Batum and Wallace come to mind). I'm thinking this was for the pick though. I can't see us keeping both Kemba and Gordon.

****. Yes. Woooooooooooo. Go Cho.

I loved the Chicago Ben Gordon. Going to Detroit was a huge mistake for him.

captaincrunk wrote:How bad is Gordon's contract?

12.4 and 13.2 player option. Not bad considering it's not going to make a dent in our long-term goals.

Kemba2Hendo wrote:We are def drafting Barnes.

Not necessarily Barnes but a SF. Trade or draft, we're getting someone.
