But while Josh Smith is not a superstar PF and never will be, he breaks the mold and epitomizes hustle defense and brings size and athleticism at SF.

Lets not speak in generalizations here.

I feel like I'm beating a dead horse here.

-Josh hustles...sometimes. Other times he is the last player back on defense because he's arguing with officials/moping/menstruating.
-Josh has feuded with every pro coach he's had. Woody, the disciplinarian and LD the player's coach.
-Josh takes terrible shots. Even when his production/stats indicate he shouldn't.
-Josh has a TERRIBLE basketball IQ. he throws alley-oops from half court. He throws the ball to the opposing team during in bounds plays in playoff games.
-He plays off emotion, good when he's happy...very bad when he's not.

He's just not worth the headache and he's in his prime now. Meaning, two years from now, he's just an undersized PF who can't jump or dunk like the old days.

He's not a great scorer. He's an average rebounder. He is a great weakside shot blocker, but can't guard PFs (other than Bosh). He just doesn't do anything great. He could def put a team like OKC or LAL over the top, but on a middling team, he's not particularly helpful.

Plus, Josh wants to leave. And I can't blame him.

Jamaaliver, before this season, I would have mostly agreed with your assessment of Smoove. I will agree that he is bad where it comes to decision-making, bad shots, and attitude. But saying that he is a poor scorer and rebounder is just silly. I've seen him take over games with his defense/shotblocking and rebounding. He is an emotional player, but that's what makes him the most attractive player on this team. He drives me crazy when I hear him getting into it with the coaches or talking about wanting a trade, and I just have to cringe when he starts whining about calls instead of playing bball. For many reasons, it is a love/hate thing for me as a fan. You mentioned Hickson. I see him as the player Marvin should at least be. I have a hard time comparing him with Josh because is so unique. I honestly understand the desire to remove a hot-n-cold character from this team in favor of discipline and consistency, but part of me really doesn't want to see him go because he has been the Hawks for me from the day he was drafted.

I hear you brother. I just re-looked at Josh's stats for this past season. It was pretty impressive. I do think he has talent. No doubt.

I also hear you about Marvin putting up the prduction that Hickson does. That would be amazing if he just gave us 15p & 9r.

I just wonder if Josh can put up those numbers with Horford back. Remember, before this season Josh had never lead our team in rebounding, scoring.

I have no doubt that if traded to a contender, Josh will put up HUGE numbers. But I just don't think he's capable of doing it here. Especially with this coach. Especially playing next to AL.

i think that when Horford got injured, Josh went into an "ah screw it" mode and just played his free style game, instead of playing restrained like what Woody and Drew taught him, and it ended up saving the season for the Hawks (last year was the first time Josh lead the team in FGA). Josh was by far the Hawks MVP for 2012.

in the past seasons Josh has always played with alot of restraint that was imposed by Woodson and Drew. in 2010, Woodson told him to take less 3s, and Josh obeyed. in 2011, Drew told him to slim down and play more SF and take more 3s, and Josh did.

the bad coaching has been do to that Woodson always wanted to limit Josh because Josh was suppose to support Joe as the #1

i like Josh's 2010 season better, but it is also hard to argue with the results Josh gets when he is allowed to play his game without restrictions because he is the Hawks most cerebral and creative player.

If he can get out of his aww screw it phase i want to keep him and see what chemistry the gm can make between this team and a new bench with ivan johnson
