Not so bold prediction: Once the draft fervor dies down and real games start being played, (almost) nobody will think that this was a bad trade.

Prime example of how current draft picks are overrated. The Memphis pick will likely fall around 20-25, not much difference from 18.

well memphis pick 25th this year and there's not much reason to believe they'll be any worse(losing mayo isn't huge, probable return of darrell arthur probably softens blow)...the difference between a 24-25 and 18 is huge especially considering it is impossible(imo) to ignore the influence the lock out played on this draft pushing prospects back 3-4 spots from a normal draft...if only stern hadn't screwed us with that coin flip.
edit: also the fact that we'll have our own pick next year where the memphis pick is likely to go unused as we surely won't take on 2-3 rookies next year...if we even use our own pick.

Interesting to see that adjusted +/- stats like Budinger ,it will be fun to see how that works out next year.

There will be several major debates in the Grizzlies' draft war room, and the discussions won't solely be about which player to select near the bottom of the first round. Internal talks about trading their 25th overall pick for a young veteran player have entered the forefront of the Grizzlies' draft preparations. Team executives in favor of moving the pick lost out earlier this week when the Griz passed on a chance to acquire Houston small forward Chase Budinger. Minnesota landed Budinger Tuesday in a deal that gave Houston the 18th pick in tonight's NBA draft. Memphis Commercial Appeal

Nice to know that there were other teams interested in Budinger.

So the guys who drafted Thabeet and traded Love for Mayo are convinced that they can pick better player than Chase at 25? I wish them luck.

I guess in theory Minnesota could have traded all the way down to 19-25 before trading to Houston, but it's not like Kahn knew Houston would be content with 25.

Just out of curiosity, would 18 for Redick been more favorable than Budinger?

Yes. SG that can hit open Js and plays hard on defense. What's not to like?

In what world is JJ Reddick a good defender? I know you said "plays hard on defense," but let's be honest. Reddick isn't that much better of a defender than Budinger, if at all.

I'd probably do that.

OJ Mayo is one of the best defenders in the league, hes a two way player and hes a great passer and playmaker.
