I don't see how it hurts the Rockets to tank for a year or two. Most of their assets are young guys on rookie contracts. They'd just have to deal Lowry, Martin, and Scola. It's not like they can't replace those players down the line. And Martin and Scola are too old to be part of any rebuilding process.

Yup, which is exactly why they will have to just bite the bullet and overpay for someone under contract. If they ever do get their big fish, it will be in a deal where they get absolutely hollowed out.
ok and getting hollowed out and not getting a lebron, dwight, or durant does what for them? leaves them at about 40-45 wins.. with no assets to move for supporting pieces? talk about running on a treadmill with that....

They have been stockpiling for a few years now. You guys make it sound like they should be able to pick almost any player in the league, and craft a deal that the other team can't refuse. Yet they haven't been able to do that. They couldn't get Gasol without overpaying and they couldn't even get Memphis to look their way for Gay.
So Morey should overpay for Gasol or Gay? Come on now. He'd overpay for Carmelo, Dwight, or Deron in a heartbeat if any of those guys would commit, but they won't. Or at least they wouldn't before his most recent spate of moves. Maybe if he opens up enough room and has enough of a strong supporting cast, he can still convince Dwight. Then again, maybe not. As usual, I'm far more patient than most folks around here.
i'm guessing you don't have season tickets to the rockets.
No, but I had season tickets to the Knicks until Ewing left and Layden/Isiah destroyed the team with stupid trades.
If Rocket fans want to use years of Hakeem and Yao to act like spoiled brats and force the GM into making crappy moves for the sake of crappy moves, then good for them. That's pretty much been the NYK model since the decline of the Ewing era. Good luck with that.

So they shouldn't make a big trade unless it is for one of those guys?
I'll tell you this now, they aren't getting one of those guys.

That's the smartest thing to do... But he needs to start doing that now. He needs to stop chasing that big name because he's not going to get it.
Field a starting line up of Dragic, Lamb, Parsons, White and whoever they can at the 5 and bring Jones off the bench.

There is a huge difference between a crappy move and a less than perfect one

isn't that what the knicks have done and you complain about every second ?
no I don' think so.. but that is a different topic bro...

Whether he does a complete rebuild or trades for a star, he can't just sit in the middle. That is what everyone is saying.

Absolutely... every knows in the NBA that's the worst place to be.

I agree too. Except you just don't pull the trigger on shipping out Scola/Martin/Lowry until you're positive Dwight isn't an option. Problem with Dwight is that nothing is definite until the 11th f*kin hour.
Not to start a whole nother debate, but if we had any young assets, cap space or future picks to offer, Scola & KMart would fit great right here in NY.

I'll tell you this now, they aren't getting one of those guys.
at some point some of these guys will pan out or bust, but in the meantime, I say keep acquiring talent... and put together a good team.. and keep trying to make deals that leave your team in a good position..
tanking guarantees you nothing..

Yes they're in the middle. But at this point, they're only one Luis Scola trade away from being a complete rebuild.

It's not about guarantees. You just have to recognize that you ultimately need a star and need to take the path that gives you the better chance of getting one. Tanking isn't a guarantee but it definitely stacks the odds in your favor.

Love Scola... can't stand Martin.. dude is too frail and awful defensively.
THey need to forget Dwight Howard man.. the dude has a suspect character to begin with how would you ever trust that he's going to re-sign.

here's a question. what team do you feel better about moving forward today, houston or new orleans ? which team was in a better place before the lottery ? got to be in it to win it.

I'm trying to think of a team that didn't have a star and wallowed in mediocrity till it finally worked out.

And yet do you think that for one second if the Lakers were to be willing to part with Gasol for a package of some of their young players (either the existing ones or the ones they drafted last night) that he'd say no? He'd be all over it cause it's what he wants. Gasol is one of the guys he's been after for a long time. And obviously Pau Gasol would not be part of anyone's "rebuild".
There's nothing wrong with the guys he selected last night but it was pretty obvious that they were treating this draft as a way of potentially getting the type of assets they'd need to make a trade to bring a big name player here. The talk was them trying for Drummond to package for Howard but it's also quite possible that they were trying to get into the top 10 (which they were) so they can have an asset that the Lakers have said they wanted if they were going to move Gasol.

If they wait too long, their young players will get better and they won't be able to tank. Next year would be the perfect time to start. And just cause they trade their vets doesn't mean they can't get Dwight. If they get Dwight at the deadline, they could use cap space to build a team around him, and players will come if Dwight is already there.

Now that they have Lamb I'd starting looking to get rid of that bum Kevin Martin.
