Re: OFFICIAL NBA DRAFT THREAD. H's pick 23
Here is my issue with Perry Jones. People consider him a "super athlete" with skill but none of his numbers help support this claim. Defensively you have a player who is a non factor when it comes to blocking shots, rebounding, and steals and and offensively you get a player who can't hit threes, post up, or draw fouls against COLLEGE competition. How is he going to score in the NBA exactly?
There are literally no good current NBA players you can compare him too and I find it unlikely that he magically develops a work ethic or motor after his 1st paycheck. He's the new Yi Jianlian.

Re: OFFICIAL NBA DRAFT THREAD. H's pick 23
As I think more about it, the pick for Jenkins is very reminiscent of a San Antonio pick.
A guy who fits their system and is great at something. Nobody else on our team is really GREAT at anything.
I was REALLY hoping for Doron Lamb as he provides a similar skillset and has performed in the pressure cooker of KY basketball and the NCAA big stage.
Clearly the building of the Hawks in DFerry's image will take sometime. This is just one brick in the wall.
Did Danny Ferry just draft a guy just like himself?

6'11" and balding early? To answer the question seriously no. He drafted someone with a very distinct skill, jump shooting. I'm disappointed in that because the team itself relies on jump shooting too much and even the best jump shooters are occasionally ice cold. I would have rather had another penetrator like Wroten or maybe a player for the low block to diversify the scoring options. Honestly though Wroten is a boom or bust project and the best offensive low post guys were off the board. Ferry valued landing a shooter more than a rebounder or a shot blocker and thus the pick. He's a safe pick albeit an unexciting one. I agree with the one brick in the wall analogy. Also like you I was hoping for Doron Lamb. I didn't see much difference between the 2 and Lamb went about 19 picks later.
Going to donkey punch a leprechaun!

i think their is a huge similarity between Rashard and Perry Jones. both guys have the same body type, same skill sets, same worth ethic, super athletic coming out of high school, and both guys were lottery talents that fell hard in the draft. in 2 or 3 years you are going to see Perry scoring points in the same fashions as Rashard and taking jumpshots and 3 pointers like Rashard, and Perry's defense will probably be average just like Rashard. who knows what numbers Rashard would have gotten under Scott Drew in Baylor.
Perry also has a slight similarity to Danny Manning, but not as strong comparison as to Rashard. both Perry and Manning are long, lanky, combo forwards, multi skilled players, and both Perry and Manning struggled in their freshmen and sophomore year (Manning freshimen 14/7, sophomore 16/6). but Perry is probably more athletic and Manning is the better passer. both Manning and Perry struggled in their first two years in college, but Manning became 25/10 as a junior and senior, and Perry Jones is in the NBA now under Scott Brooks

Casper Ware ........ he has Muggsy Bogues defense inside of him
when you look at him, it looks like he doesn't belong on the court, but at the end of the game he ends up being the MVP. he is small, outside shot is just average, but he is known as a nice guy who plays with too much heart.

Comparing a guy to Rashard Lewis (or Danny Manning for that matter) not really the way to convince us how good he is.
Time will tell though. I think a shrewd GM would have drafted Perry Jones III and then traded him for more picks. We could have gotten Jenkins 3 or 4 picks later and picked up an extra 2nd round pick in the process.

Perry Jones has alot of things in common with Rashard Lewis....unfortunately 3 point shooting isn't one of those things. The players he should be compared to are the Earl Clark's and Craig Brackins of the world.

Clark and Brackins are way off in terms of size, height, and athleticism in comparison to Perry Jones. Clark and Brackins are no were the athlete that Perry Jones is, not even close.
the closes comparison to Perry Jones' size, height, weight, speed, vertical and athletism would be Joakim Noah, Al Horford, and Steven Hunter.
the closes comparison to Perry's skills would be Rashard Lewis, Rudy Gay, Al Harrington.

Brackins and Clark are "way off" when it comes to physical ability but both blocked more shots and grabbed more rebounds and got drafted higher.
I'm confused as to you're comparisons. Where does Jones utilize this great athleticism in game situations? Do you think he has a 3 point shot or tremendous passing skills that he was hiding at Baylor?

And to think we were 1 pick away from Doron Lamb in the 2nd round

you are way off and confused, what does blocks and rebounds have to do with anything? Rashard Lewis didn't get that many blocks and rebounds, Danny Manning didn't get that many blocks and rebounds, Rudy Gay, LMA, Jamal Mashburn, Shareef Abdur-Rahim, etc...... heck Blake Griffin doesn't even get that many blocks!!!

Notice that none of those guys ever led their teams to any significant success in the NBA.
Gay and Griffin have never made it past the 2nd round and Shareef never even made it to the playoffs...
None of those guys are really winners. And if that's who you're comparing Perry Jones III to, maybe it is a good thing we didn't get him.

Re: OFFICIAL NBA DRAFT THREAD. H's pick 23
^ If Ferry drafted Jenkins because he knew he was going to trade Joe later on..... then i take back all the bad stuff i said about Ferry.
i can see Ferry's logic now, because even though Jenkins doesn't have the ceiling that Wroten or Doron have, Jenkins is more NBA ready at this moment than Wroten and Doron.
so if the Joe trade does happen, then for me, the pick becomes horrible to very good

Re: OFFICIAL NBA DRAFT THREAD. H's pick 23
Looking this thread over made me laugh big time. Mike Scott looks like a total steal in the second round. The 2nd coming of Paul Millsap. Hope MScot is with the team for a long time.
Jury is still out on JJ2. Hope Jenks recovers from back surgery and proves us wrong.
Perry has largely been underwhelming thus far. But Ezeli has had some moments where he looked like a keeper.
