Make the trade or tank for Dwight, CP, Josh, and Shabazz??

Post#1 » by dtown8 » Tue Jul 3, 2012 1:38 am

Ferry could go ahead and make the Dwight/Turk trade now, but Turk's contract takes CP3 out as a possibility

or the Hawks could not make the trade and maybe miss the playoffs and get a lottery pick, maybe not as high to get Shabazz but high enough to get a guy like Adonis Thomas, or Archie Goodwin, and make a Wade/Lebron/Bosh type of trio signing with Josh/Dwight/Chris Paul

Hawks wont have enough cap space to have Horford, Smith and a cap hold for a draft pick and still offer both Howard and Paul max contracts.

if you do the math and offer the same type of contracts that Miami gave to the big three ($14.5M first year) to Josh, Dwight, and Chris Paul, it works out under the cap while keeping Horford.

Hawks can still keep Horford and sign Josh, Dwight, and Chris Paul

Dwight $14.5 million
Horford $12 million
Josh $14.5 million
Chris Paul $14.5 million

Total $55.5 million

I'd make Josh my Odom (plays SF sometimes too).

Ferry has put together a garbage team on the court, all this does is give unrealistic dreamers of floor to phuck up the forum with a bunch of dumb ass ideas. Tanking has never guaranteed anything.

?? We're obviously @ step 1 of Ferry's plan. Step 1 was to clear the bad contracts off the roster so that we could make a move on someone in FA and he has accomplished that mission with surprising efficiency and skill (barely 2 weeks on the job, 0 long term contracts taken back, no future assets lost). Now, I do agree that taking this cap space and turning it into a good team isn't necessarily the same skill, but I like Ferry a lot more now than I was last week.

You don't have to tank. You just don't sign anyone that eats into next year's cap space. You play out this season with:

Jeff Teague/vet min
Devin Harris/Anthony Morrow/John Jenkins
Josh Smith/Deshawn Stevenson
Al Horford/Ivan Johnson/Mike Scott
Zaza Pachulia/Johan Petro/Jordan Williams

You have 2 other spots open for other vet minimum help or 1 year contract help. I think it is a playoff team, but maybe it comes up short. Either way it's one season to risk for a level of future hope that we didn't have a week ago.

Next summer you make runs at Dwight and/or CP3 in either direct signing or S&T using Al if comes to it. If it doesn't pan out then you can resign Jeff and Josh and another non-max piece. At worst we come out of this as a younger less expensive version of the same core team with the flexibility to try and improve. At best we have a core to rival anyone during the prime of their careers. Even if everything backfires and you wind up with an essentially clean slate, you get there 3 years earlier than you would have without the trade.

i think everybody is in agreement. don't make the Horford/Dwight trade...... just let the season play out, maybe get a low lotto pick or mid first round pick and then reach for the stars with Dwight and CP

Exactly right: watch this team play next year without a trade (unless a great deal is dropped into our laps).

Maybe Horford and Smith explode at PF and SF.
Maybe, without Joe to take the shots, those 2 score 45/game with 20 reb/game.
Maybe Zaza plays so well he becomes really attractive to a team without a Center.
Maybe Teague loves the new style we'll have to play without Joe.
Maybe Morrow and Jenkins become money from outside.

There's so much potential on this team, why give it away at a discount before we find out what they can do?

We're IMO too talented to tank. I'd rather play out the year, try to draft some good players, and make a run at Dwight and CP3.

I don't understand how waiting until next year to hope that we can attract Dwight and Paul to play for less with Smith, Horford, Teague, and a mediocre draft pick next year will work. I think the Magic are looking to trade now, and if we don't step up, the Nets will get him and he will re-sign there. We could offer Horford, Teague, Zaza, and pick(s) if he agrees to sign an extension. There is a decent shot at that because of his relationship with Josh, and because he is from Atl. It's a matter of trying to use that relationship to lock him up now, versus losing him the Nets while hoping to capitalize on that relationship later.

Someone walk me through the numbers of how it would work to try to sign Howard next year though. How much cap space would we have at that time, and how much could we offer him? We aren't re-signing any one with bird rights that same year are we? In what order would we then try to sign other players?

^ Hawks can go Horford for Dwight, Hawks don't have to add additional players or picks. i wouldn't go higher with Teague or HOU's pick. Just let the Magic decide between Horford and what ever the Nets put together.

but i wouldn't do it, i'm with everybody else, go with the current roster and wait until free agency.

the danger with trading for Dwight is that: the Hawks lose Horford and Dwight doesn't resign, if Dwight doesn't resign, then Josh gets emotionally down after loosing Horford and Dwight and he leaves. thus Hawks are only left with Teague

the safety with not making the trade is that: Hawks keep Horford and have enough cap to get a good player and that show Josh, Ferry is committed to winning and Josh resigns along with the new guy Ferry gets. thus that secures Horford, Josh, Teague, and the new guy for the Hawks.

Can Dwight sign an extension during prior to the trade? I'm not saying that he would for us, I'm just asking if this could be something we require as part of the trade?
