I'm sure Nash understands that they made this move because they didnt want to give him more money.

Hope nash understands how many assists he's gonna lose out on, by being running mates with Fields if he goes up to toronto LOL

So no Allen for them then?

It seems like if Nash was really gung ho about the Raptors he would have committed while they still had flexibility to build a team around him. I mean for instance, they could have used the extra room to take back Artest's contract in a Bargs + Derozan for Gasol swap.

Market value is whatever the market is willing to pay at any given time. And what's with the blame on Landry? He got no extension, no contract offers from the Knicks. He's a RFA and they told him to go out and sign an offer sheet so they can determine what he's worth. Well here it is.

I'd played out a few scenarios in my head, but I'll admit this is one I didn't see coming. But if someone offered Fields a $20M contract, I can hardly blame him for taking it, especially it didn't look like his current team wanted him to play for them next season anyway. But Colangelo's move sure does muddy the water a bit, especially with a poison pill contract.

We've got a couple of unrestricted free agents out there (Novak and Smith) who seem sentimentally tied to the Knicks, but if any team offers them a good contract for more than they think they can get from the Knicks, we're at risk for losing one or more of them. I'm not sure this changes anything between the Knicks and Lin or not. But I hope they're going to offer him something soon. Telling him that they're shopping for another starting PG and inviting him to essentially get offers from other teams so they can decide what to pay him makes me a bit worried.

I certainly don't blame the Knicks for chasing Nash. But there's a risk to leaving four free agents (two UFA and two RFA) hanging with no contract offers from the Knicks.

The only way Lin gets paid (like really paid) is if another team offers him a backloaded deal. We're doing him a favor by letting him field offers and then matching. The most we're allowed to offer under the ridiculously flawed CBA is much less than what we can give him by matching.

Similar gig for Novak.

The only one we're leaving in limbo is JR Smith, who isn't worth resigning for anything more than his 120% raise anyway. I really don't see the problem in making these guys wait.

Not really doing him a favor. He's a free agent. You don't "let" him field offers.

Ok who?

I mean Fields may not be worth 6-7m per year, but I'd say he's worth 3-4m.
What min salary player gets that production?

Given the exceptional ability the Knicks have shown to find rotational pieces on the "scrap heap" (2nd round/waivers/min FAs) over the past 2 years (Jeffries, Purp, Fields, Harrelson, Novak, Lin), I'm not too worried about the ability to find the player. I understand you want a name, but given that I wouldn't have pointed at the above 5 guys until I heard that they were actually on the Knicks' radar or available (released), it doesn't make sense that I'd be able to come up with a name for this situation.

Alright I can't really argue with that.

But it's a little funny to me that you cite our "exceptional ability" to find rotation pieces incl. Fields in the 2nd round, and then don't see much value to retaining this very piece that we found.

I'm still saying (along with cmgw) -- other than wasting more of Dolan's money, what's the harm in keeping this useful piece?

Probably Houston, he must have hated watching Fields shoot all those bricks.

or woodson who doesn't care about hurting feelings.

Yep. That sounds like Woody all the way. Fields s the type of guy I'd love to have a beer with, but he does indeed suck. We should not match under circumstances.

Beautiful - Raptors with fields , Boston with Terry, LA with Crawful. The list of potential Mayo suitors is dropping. Offer up the TD, Jordan, Gadzooks, Harrelson deal to Memphis and get this done. Then get Camby or Kmart and let's roll.

TBH, I dont think it really changes that much. If Nash wants to come here he still can.

Good for Fields. He just got overpaid like a bandit.

No way we can match that offer the way the NBA now works.

There was a reason nobody was listening to you when you told your wisdom before. Nothing has changed since then.

I could see this pissing off Dolan so much that he does whatever it takes to get Nash to win the "war" with Colangelo of the Raptors.

As much as it would suck to lose Shumpert, I would send him in a trade if its the ONLY way to get Nash.

Nash has 2-3 years of good ball left and the Knicks players are all in their prime now. Our chance at at title is the next 1-3 years. Not after.

You have to go for it now and not worry about 4 years from now.
