Market value is whatever the market is willing to pay at any given time. And what's with the blame on Landry? He got no extension, no contract offers from the Knicks. He's a RFA and they told him to go out and sign an offer sheet so they can determine what he's worth. Well here it is.
I'd played out a few scenarios in my head, but I'll admit this is one I didn't see coming. But if someone offered Fields a $20M contract, I can hardly blame him for taking it, especially it didn't look like his current team wanted him to play for them next season anyway. But Colangelo's move sure does muddy the water a bit, especially with a poison pill contract.
We've got a couple of unrestricted free agents out there (Novak and Smith) who seem sentimentally tied to the Knicks, but if any team offers them a good contract for more than they think they can get from the Knicks, we're at risk for losing one or more of them. I'm not sure this changes anything between the Knicks and Lin or not. But I hope they're going to offer him something soon. Telling him that they're shopping for another starting PG and inviting him to essentially get offers from other teams so they can decide what to pay him makes me a bit worried.
I certainly don't blame the Knicks for chasing Nash. But there's a risk to leaving four free agents (two UFA and two RFA) hanging with no contract offers from the Knicks.

Given the exceptional ability the Knicks have shown to find rotational pieces on the "scrap heap" (2nd round/waivers/min FAs) over the past 2 years (Jeffries, Purp, Fields, Harrelson, Novak, Lin), I'm not too worried about the ability to find the player. I understand you want a name, but given that I wouldn't have pointed at the above 5 guys until I heard that they were actually on the Knicks' radar or available (released), it doesn't make sense that I'd be able to come up with a name for this situation.
