^ My understanding is that the "Arenas rule" was actually meant to close a loophole. The whole reason Gil left was because GSW could only offer the MLE since he was only an Early Bird FA and they were over the cap. And if another team offered more than that, they couldn't exceed the cap to match the offer because they didn't have full Bird Rights. Essentially the Warriors were being penalized for finding a star talent in the second round and grooming him because they couldn't make a competitive offer to keep him.

The rule was put in place in the previous round of CBA negotiations to allow teams to re-sign their Early Bird FA to something more than just the MLE. And in the cases of Fields and Asik, their previous teams can now match the offer even if they don't have cap space because they can use the Mid Level Exception for the first year.

Knicks and Bulls can match it, but they will be penalized for it. Houston and Toronto are taking advantage of this. It's shrewd, but completely legal.

Jason Terry signs with the Celtics... this might stop the Celtics from having those long scoring droughts.

He was looking better and better while he was a Wizard. Of course he will look better being on another team where he is coming off the bench and having to work to get paid so he has to listen.

What will be interesting is to see how he does after getting paid. Maybe things will work out for him. Maybe not. I'm just glad we aren't bent over the barrel paying him 10+ over 4 or 5 years while we find out.

Sources: The Nets & Magic are discussing a trade that would send Dwight Howard to Brooklyn for Brook Lopez, Kris Humphies, Marshon Brooks and picks.
Nets' picks that would be traded to Orlando would be 2013, 2015 and 2017, source says....

Those could make this deal look really good for the Magic. Also I think they get enough pieces to field a respectable(possible play-offs) team. I wonder if there might be a possiblity of trading with the Magic to get a shooter. The Wizards might have the cap space to trade for Reddick if Blatche is amnestied. Another option might be a blockbuster Justin Harper for Shelvin Mack.

I think Jameer Nelson makes more sense for the Wizards than Trevor Ariza. He is a better shooter and a better player. I feel the same about Jason Richardson.

Justin Harper is a guy we talked about before his draft. He is the kind of shooter the Wizards could get. I wouldn't mind swapping Ariza, Crawford, Mack, C. Singleton and/or Booker in a deal with the Magic.

Hell yeah. I wanted Brooks and Harper in the draft last year so bring'm on over.

Dallas has cap room and they can't seem to find anyone to sign.

Phoenix signed Gordon to an offer sheet but New Orleans is going to match anyway. Just two more examples of teams w/cap space and no one to spend it on. We have been talking a lot about cap flexibility and the like, but it just seems like we'd be in a worse position than the two teams I mentioned because players would actually want to go there.

Completely agree. I hope McGee does pull it together, and I hope Nene helps make us a force in the East.

I hope I didn't come across as negative regarding CCJ or his comments - I only intended benign bemusement.

Illuminaire, the only thing I have gone back on was saying I was wrong about what Nene would bring to the Wizards. He is a much better player than I thought. He is still better than Seraphin. He is much more proficient on offense than I thought. His defensive rotations are wonderful to see. He has great hands. I am glad he is a Wizard. Initially, I worried that Nene was no longer all that good. I was wrong.

McGee went to a flexible coach. Karl benched him at times but he also encouraged Javale to do what McGee does. He blocks shots from the weakside and Karl adapted his role to let him do that. I am happy that McGee is happy with the move to Denver, even after he had to come off the bench.

So far so good with what Denver and the Wizards did. If Nene stays healthy, all will be well. McGee is pretty reliable to give the same type effort/results, if he doesn't continue to improve a bit.
Tre Johnson is the future of the Wizards.

Well, in a year or so, I'm not so sure players would want to go there. Why go to Phoenix and play alongside a 37-year-old Nash, or no Nash at all? Why go to Dallas and play alongside a 35-year-old Nowitzki and no backcourt?

The key is to be a pretty good team AND have cap room. We could have done that if we bought out Lewis and amnestied Blatche. Now we won't have the cap room. (Nevertheless, a trade is still possible so I won't keep harping on the Okafor acquisition anymore. We'll just wait and see.)

Reportedly Hibbert, Gordon, and Batum all want to play for the teams that offered them new contracts. Seems like they're still mad about their current team low-balling them.

And we'll end this thread on closg00's brilliantly insightful post.
