CP3 rejects extension offer from Clippers

Saw the report from ESPN. It was a 3 year 60 million deal he rejected.

It was mentioned in the Blake signing thread. It's not really news whether people (Bucher, Knick beat writers, etc.) try to make it news or not. It was to be expected from the beginning of the trade and the primary reason why he and Howard were averse to doing extend-and-trades last offseason. It didn't make $en$e.

Sign a 5 year/$108M contract that will secure him until he is 33 next summer. It would also expire the same time as Blake's 5 year extension.

or

Sign a 3 year/$60M extension that only secures him until he is 31.

We're talking a difference of a guaranteed $125M (over 6 years) vs $77M (over 4 years). Sure you can say that taking the extension would allow him to go after a new contract at 31, but who is to say that he would be worth a contract starting at $23-25M at that time.

Not a surprise, he can get more if he waits, but of course the Clippers would be dumb not to attempt to offer it.

Yeh people just see the rejection headline. There's a reason why he did it, and its not because he wants to leave Clipper land.

This was expected, however Frank Isola's tweet about many team execs thinking that CP3 still wanting to sign with the Knicks next off season is a bit disconcerting

Chris Paul Committed to Clippers

When free agency opened on Sunday, Chris Paul was one of the first players to receive a contract offer. The Los Angeles Clippers contacted him almost immediately, offering a three-year, $60 million extension. While Paul turned down the offer, it doesn’t mean his days in Los Angeles are numbered. The 27-year-old will put off signing a new contract until next July, when he’s eligible to ink a five-year, $110-million extension with the Clippers.

While there has already been speculation that Paul will bolt to join fellow 2013 unrestricted free agent Dwight Howard on a new team such as the Atlanta Hawks or Houston Rockets, the superstar point guard seems committed to the Clippers. Even though he didn’t put pen to paper, he’s going about his business as if he expects to be in Los Angeles for years to come.

Over the past three days, Paul has been aggressively recruiting for the Clippers, contacting free agents and attempting to sell them on the situation. His pitch has been convincing, with talk about the promising future in Los Angeles and opportunity to compete for a championship. While most players have one foot out the door as free agency looms, Paul is working the phones and planning face-to-face meetings with potential teammates.

Recruiting free agents, developing young talent and bonding off the court aren’t responsibilities that a departing superstar usually takes on if his days with a franchise are numbered. Sources close to the point guard say he loves Los Angeles and has been impressed with the Clippers organization. His experience has been positive and while not signing an extension allows him to keep his options open, the decision was more about securing the extra two years and $48 million available next offseason.

It's the most we could have offered him at the time. The FO knew he wouldn't agree, but it's still something you have to do because you can and should.

Chris Paul talks Clippers extension

"I'll wait until next summer to decide everything," Paul told ESPNLosAngeles.com Saturday after officially being named to the United States Olympic team. "It's funny, ESPN doesn't put at the bottom of the ticker, like why you don't do the three-year. But I opted in for this year or I would've had the opportunity to do that again this summer."

"Neil's gone and that was tough," Paul said. "Neil had a lot to do with me being here with the Clippers so I'm always going to be grateful to him for that. But he has a family to take of, things like that."

Asked if that would affect his feeling about his future with the organization, Paul said forcefully, "I'm excited about our future. Bringing in Jamal (Crawford), and obviously getting Chauncey (Billups) back. Everybody knows how I feel about that. That was huge."

"Some guys I wouldn't be as confident about," Paul said. "Coming off that injury, I can tell you the truth, I probably wouldn't have been as much like, 'Let's go get 'em.' But with Chauncey, I'm not going to second-guess it.

"Chauncey's been working extremely hard. I know when he went down, I was tore up, he was tore up. But more so than age, it's about determination and Chauncey has that. Every time I talk to him this summer he's doing that. I'm like, 'What you doing?' He's always at rehab."

glad that he seems to be on board and has a vested interest in blake's development.

would love to see Roeser and Donald T. do something to insure him that there is stability there...maybe giving Gary Sacks a 5 year deal and a bigger staff....

All I can rly hope is that Orlando doesn't snatch Mike Malone and we can get him at a decent Donald T price next year.

Agreed. I feel that the Olympic experience could impact his game most on the defensive end. The coaching staff (outside of D'Antoni :lol:

) and playing with the likes of LeBron, Chandler, Kobe, Iggy, etc. should have him more in tune with what it takes to be a better defender.

Knicks fan chiming in. I don't think there's any chance that we make a move for CP3 if no unforseen circumstances arise (like god forbid, a Griffin career ending injury).

I also am sure that not signing an extension right now is first and foremost a financial move and CP3 and his handlers are following the baseline logic.

But I am not 100% sure that I agree with that logic.

Say he were to sign a 3 year extension now, that would keep him under contract until 2016.

He could build in a ETO or PO after 14/15 meaning he'd be a free agent at the age of 30.

If he keeps his level at least somewhere close to where it's at right now then he'll almost certainly get another max deal (5years from the clippers in that scenario) that will last him through 35. If you look at recent player contracts he would then have to take paycut depending on his level, probably in the 10m a year region.

Now if he signs a 5 year extension in 2013 with an ETO one year before the expiration then he'll be 32 at which age he might not get the max.

So I think there is a chance that over the long run he'd be better off financially with taking the 3 year extension right now.

One unsettling thing was Isola's tweet awhile back saying basically that many team execs think that Paul will join the Knicks next off season. Hopefully those are just BS rumors, but Isola is usually pretty accurate. However, there is no way the Knicks could pay him anything close to what the Clips will offer unless there would be some sort of sign and trade.

It's easy for writers/reporters of certain teams to float rumors to their respective fanbases because they'll be eager to believe.

The Knicks do not have any cap space and have already used their amnesty. The Knicks are at $59M with just Chandler, Melo, Stoudemire and Shumpert on the books. They're going to add the salary of Novak, Kidd, Lin and whatever other free-agents that they may sign. We do not have interest of trading CP3 for Chandler or Amar'e, so the Knicks are not a threat to land him unless he's willing to go there for the MLE.

i highly doubt cp3 is going anywhere. bg is already getting an extension and i'm pretty sure cp3 is going to want to stay here with him.

bg wants to win, cp3 wants to win, numbers don't matter either of them as long as they win, so i'm pretty sure they aren't going anywhere for a while.
